Tax Accountant - Oil & Gas Midland, TX 79701 Full-time Full-time Tax Accountant - Oil & Gas Position Summary BTA Oil Producers is looking for a Tax Accountant that will be responsible for supporting our accounting, tax, and compliance functions. This role will manage partnership, individual, and trust tax matters; assist with accounting and financial reporting activities; coordinate multi-state tax compliance; and provide technical tax research and analysis related to oil and gas operations. The ideal candidate possesses strong oil and gas tax expertise, public accounting experience, and the ability to work effectively within a complex accounting and tax environment. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Oversee the recording and classification of oil and gas exploration and production activity, including periodic asset acquisitions and divestitures. Maintain fixed-asset ledger and process year-end reclassification of leasehold, drilling, and completion costs for tax purposes. Assist with partnership allocations, depletion calculations, and analysis of oil and gas-related tax provisions and consequences. Prepare annual closing and roll-forward entries for multiple partnerships. Prepare periodic tax estimates for partnerships, individuals, and trusts. Research and resolve a wide array of tax questions including but not limited to oil and gas issues, individual tax provisions, and trust matters. Prepare and electronically file Texas Franchise returns. Electronically file federal and state (multiple) returns. Coordinate multi-state severance and sales tax compliance projects (primarily
TX, NM, OK
). Analyze and reconcile intercompany settlements and general ledger activity in a multi-company environment. Maintain and control the account structure and entity setup, including company and cost center setup. Assist Controller and Assistant Controller with day-to-day accounting functions. Qualifications and Experience Desired Preparation and review of oil & gas partnership tax returns (Federal and multi-state:
TX, NM, OK, ND, LA
). Experience with partnership allocations, depletion, and other oil & gas-specific tax provisions. Preparation of individual (Form 1040) and trust (Form 1041) returns, including quarterly and annual tax estimates for individuals and trusts. Exposure to Texas Sales Tax and New Mexico Gross Receipts Tax. Exposure to severance and sales tax compliance a plus. Ability to analyze, research, and communicate tax issues effectively. 7+ years of experience in public accounting, ideally with oil & gas clients. Preferred Competencies Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Excellent attention to detail and organizational abilities. Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with accounting, finance, and operations teams. Reporting Relationship Reports to the Controller and works closely with the Assistant Controller and other members of the accounting and finance team.
