Senior Accounting Manager Position Type:

The Senior Accounting Manager plays a vital role within the Accounting Department at Norfolk Botanical Garden, overseeing financial accounting and reporting operations. This position assists the Vice President of Finance to ensure the accurate and timely preparation of budgets and financial reports. The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented professional with strong analytical and problem-solving skills, extensive experience in accounting, and the ability to interpret financial data to support organizational decision-making. This role requires a commitment to accuracy, efficiency, and collaboration in a dynamic nonprofit environment. Essential Functions:
GL, Reporting & Budget Operations Maintain and oversee general ledger accounts, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and compliance with accounting standards. Perform comprehensive monthly account reconciliations to identify and investigate discrepancies in the general ledger, ensuring proper alignment of financial records and reporting. Record financial transactions in the general ledger by preparing and posting closing journal entries in a timely and accurate manner in the month end close process. Demonstrate a strong understanding of the budgeting process, and cross-departmental collaboration for budget planning and providing strategic budget recommendations. Prepare monthly departmental budget reports, providing financial insights and recommendations to support informed decision-making. Generate and review accurate internal balance sheets and profit & loss statements, ensuring completeness and accuracy before final approval Lead the development and management of the organizational budget, including researching, analyzing, and determining allocations across various departments and expense categories to ensure alignment with strategic goals and financial sustainability. Conduct in-depth financial analysis and support special projects as assigned, leveraging data-driven insights to enhance financial operations and inform leadership decisions. Maintain a well-organized and up-to-date filing system of financial records, ensuring proper documentation of all transactions for audit readiness and internal control purposes. Prepare annual filings as assigned by supervisor. Partner with the VP of Finance to support the daily accounting department operations, financial planning, budgeting, and reporting needs across the Garden. Accounts Payable Management Oversee and manage relationships with vendors, ensuring efficient processing invoices and payments via ACH or check.• Review stale checks and process stop payments or voids as needed. Manage banking online positive pay system by uploading checks and ACH disbursed by NBG and review/approve any positive pay exceptions. Sort and disperse incoming daily mail, ensuring all A/P invoices received via mail are dispersed for proper approval. Ensure all donation checks received via mail are scanned and saved for development and physical checks are disbursed. Apply knowledge of cost allocations (utilities, etc.) to ensure accurate expense distribution across departments and projects when posting invoices. Oversee new vendor credit applications and ensure W-9 compliance, with consistent vendor onboarding. Fixed Asset Management Maintain detailed records of fixed assets, tracking acquisitions, disposals, and calculating depreciation in accordance with accounting policies. Leadership and Supervision:
The Senior Accounting Manager provides day-to-day leadership and supervision to finance department staff in support of the organization's mission and operational goals. This role is responsible for mentoring team members, fostering collaboration, and ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting, analysis and compliance. Assist with Garden-wide special events and other duties as assigned. Essential Physical Functions:
This position regularly requires the candidate to sit for long periods of time at a desk. This position requires the knowledge of using a computer, printer and copier and communicate via email. This position requires the candidate to travel between various buildings on the Garden campus. Qualifications:
A Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is required. A minimum of 7-10 years of relevant accounting experience is preferred, with experience in a nonprofit setting considered a plus. Strong proficiency in general ledger accounting software and advanced Microsoft Excel skills. Thorough understanding of and ability to apply Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). Exceptional communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to convey financial concepts to non-financial staff. Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple deadlines, and maintain attention to detail. A team-oriented mindset with the ability to work effectively across departments. High level of integrity and discretion in handling sensitive financial information. Ability to undertake special projects and/or additional tasks as assigned by supervisor, including preparation of reports as needed. Work as part of a team by cross-training between team members on key essential tasks for maximum benefit and coverage of important functions within the department. Ability to work independently or as part of a group/team. Ability to handle stress under pressure and multitask. Ability to be flexible with job demands or the request to complete new tasks, and be open minded to learn new skills.
