Job Description
The Cost Controller plays a critical role in ensuring the financial success of a projects by managing and controlling project costs from start to completion. This position involves developing, monitoring, and maintaining project budgets, tracking costs, analyzing variances, and providing accurate financial reporting to ensure projects remain within budget. The Cost Controller will work closely with project managers, a scheduler, and financial teams to proactively identify cost risks and opportunities, driving efficiency and ensuring adherence to financial targets. This role will also manage change orders and track the financial impact of project changes, ensuring that financial data is transparent, timely, and actionable. The Cost Controller contributes to strategic decision-making, ultimately helping to ensure the profitability and successful execution of projects.
Description of Duties:
Develop and maintain budgets for mechanical construction projects, ensuring alignment with project goals and financial targets. Monitor and track all project costs, including labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractor expenses. Perform detailed analysis of cost variances and provide explanations to project management and financial teams. Prepare cost forecasts and financial reports to support project planning and risk management. Produce regular reports on project costs, budget performance, and financial status for internal and external stakeholders. Review and validate invoices, ensuring they align with purchase orders, contracts, and project budgets. Establish and maintain cost control systems to track and report project expenditures in real time. Work closely with project managers, purchasing teams, and field supervisors to ensure accurate cost reporting and budgeting. Track and report the financial impact of project changes, including change orders and scope adjustments. Identify cost risks and opportunities, providing recommendations for corrective actions when needed. Ensure adherence to company policies, accounting standards, and contract requirements related to project costs. Other duties as assigned.Preferred Knowledge, Experience & Skills Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Construction Management, or a related field. Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in cost control, financial analysis, or project accounting in the construction industry, preferably in mechanical contracting. Experience with construction project management software (e.g., Procore, Viewpoint) and accounting systems (e.g., Sage, JD Edwards). Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Excellent communication and collaboration abilities. Proficient in Microsoft Excel and other financial modeling tools. Ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
