Position Summary Mauldin & Jenkins is seeking an experienced Manager for our Audit Department, specializing in Non-Profit Organizations. This role requires a professional who combines technical accounting expertise in the non-profit sector with exceptional leadership and client relationship skills. You will oversee non-profit audit engagements, mentor staff, manage budgets, and act as a trusted business advisor to our clients.
Job Responsibilities Client Service Excellence Primary Liaison:
Serve as the client's primary point of contact, building and fostering deep personal relationships with key decision-makers, board members, and executive directors.
Proactive Advisory:
Stay ahead of industry trends, Uniform Guidance updates, and
FASB/GAAP
changes specific to non-profits, actively sharing relevant developments to maintain client loyalty.
Strategic Oversight:
Understand the unique business goals, funding strategies, and mission-driven motivations of non-profit clients to serve as a valued business advisor.
Engagement Economics:
Delegate tasks appropriately, balancing overall engagement economics with the professional development needs of the team.
Delivery & Timeline:
Ensure the engagement is thorough, complete, and ready for Director or Partner review within established timeframes and budgets; provide timely updates to Partners regarding status and critical issues.
People Management & Relationships Firm Citizenship:
Participate actively in internal activities, including facilitating Continuing Professional Education (CPE), campus recruiting, and internal peer inspections.
Mentorship & Training:
Provide robust on-the-job training and ongoing mentorship for staff and seniors; optionally serve as a formal Career Advisor.
Constructive Feedback:
Deliver real-time, balanced, and actionable feedback (both positive and developmental) to the entire engagement team.
Conflict Resolution:
Demonstrate the maturity to guide difficult conversations gracefully with both clients and internal engagement team members.
Role Modeling:
Serve as a positive role model for staff, exemplifying strong client interactions and a healthy WorkLife balance.
Productivity & Business Growth Financial Metrics:
Meet established individual charge hour goals and engagement margin metrics.
Efficiency:
Understand historical client engagement data and leverage prior workflow dynamics to maximize current project efficiencies.
Billing Integrity:
Maintain strong awareness of engagement economics and profitability drivers; participate directly in the billing process and fee arrangements.
Scope Management:
Proactively identify out-of-scope work and tactfully navigate fee adjustments or expanded scope discussions with the client.
Business Development:
Set and maintain personal business development goals, utilizing internal and external networking to expand your Centers of Influence (COI) network.
Cross-Selling:
Develop a strong understanding of M&J's diverse service lines to identify additional client needs.
Proposal Participation:
Actively participate in the proposal process, including prospective client discovery meetings, proposal drafting, and fee budget development. Required Skills /
Abilities Industry Knowledge:
In-depth understanding of industry-specific audit information, compliance, and regulatory requirements for non-profits.
Communication:
Solid interpersonal and verbal/written communication skills.
Leadership:
Proven track record of managing, coaching, and developing staff accountants.
Project Management:
Proven ability to manage multiple audit client engagements concurrently throughout the year.
Travel Flexibility:
Ability and willingness to travel; overnight travel may be necessary depending on engagement locations.
Schedule Flexibility:
Flexibility to work weekends during peak busy seasons, as required to meet client deadlines.
Education & Experience Credentials:
Must hold an active CPA License.
Experience:
Progressive public accounting experience (or equivalent) with a strong, demonstrable focus on auditing non-profit organizations (e.g., public charities, foundations, associations, or Uniform Guidance/Single Audits).
Qualifications & Experience Education & Certification:
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Accounting; active CPA License is required.
Experience:
5 to 7+ years of progressive public accounting experience, with a heavy emphasis on non-profit auditing (e.g., public charities, foundations, associations, and religious organizations).
Technical Expertise:
Strong working knowledge of
US GAAP, FASB
standards for non-profits (ASC 958), and Single Audits under Uniform Guidance (2 CFR 200).
Skills:
Exceptional project management, negotiation, and multi-tasking abilities; capable of leading multiple engagements simultaneously.
