Travel may occur both in and out of state as we have taxpayers throughout the U.S. These positions are under the supervision of the Supervising Tax Auditor II and performs the more difficult and complex field audits or examinations of taxpayer's accounts and records. The incumbents in these positions will learn the application of tax laws as they will be responsible for: Analyzing business records and taxpayer claims for refunds. Corresponding with taxpayers, attorneys, and accountants. The Associate Tax Auditor position is a fantastic opportunity for you to learn and apply California's tax laws while sharpening your communication and auditing skills. This recruitment has been posted for more vacancies than currently exist as it may be used to fill additional identical vacancies which occur within 180 days of the closing date of this bulletin. Under Government Code 14200, this position may be eligible for partial telework for eligible candidates residing in California. All telework/hybrid schedules require staff to report to the office a minimum number of days per week. Schedules are subject to change. Currently, per the California Budget Act of 2025, all California Department of Tax and Fee Administration salaries are subject to the provisions of the State of California's Personal Leave Program. In addition to meeting the Minimum Qualifications for the Associate Tax Auditor, competition is limited to individuals who meet at least one of the following promotional examination criteria: Have a permanent civil service appointment with CDTFA, or Are current or former employees of the legislature for 2 or more years as defined in Government Code 18990, or Are current or former non-elected exempt employees of the executive branch for 2 or more consecutive years as defined in Govt. Code 18992, or Are persons retired from the United States military honorably discharged from active duty with a service disability or honorably discharged from active duty as defined in Government Code 18991. Applicants must provide a copy of discharge papers (DD 214) for verification purposes at the time of application. Under certain circumstances other employees may be allowed to compete under provisions of Rules 234, 235 and 235.2. California Code of Regulations Rules 233, 234, 235.2 and 237 contain provisions regarding civil service status and eligibility for promotional examinations.
