Job Description

Remote Inpatient Coding Auditor
JOB SUMMARY
The Inpatient Coding Auditor accurately audits hospital inpatient, ambulatory surgery, observation, and outpatient encounters to ensure appropriate reimbursement, research accuracy, and compliance with federal and state regulations. This role serves as a subject matter expert and provides education, guidance, and audit feedback to Coding Specialists.
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Serve as a clinical coding subject matter expert using critical thinking to evaluate complex documentation issues in collaboration with medical staff and clinical documentation specialists
  • Audit ICD 10 diagnostic and procedure codes and CPT 4 codes for outpatient, ambulatory surgery, and observation encounters
  • Audit complex inpatient cases including trauma, rehabilitation, neurology, and critical care to ensure accurate APR DRG, severity of illness, risk of mortality, and present on admission assignment
  • Act as an advisor and educator to Coding Specialists and new hires
  • Report coder accuracy and monitor productivity
  • Conduct focused audits as needed
  • Communicate with hospital departments regarding coding accuracy and compliance concerns
  • Assist with appropriate coding queries and collaborate closely with CDI teams
  • Understand and support initiatives related to PPCs, MHACs, PQIs, and other quality indicators
  • Maintain compliance with AHIMA ethical coding standards
  • Support organizational mission, values, and departmental goals
  • Perform additional coding corrections or special projects as assigned
Hours:
Operating hours are 6AM to 6PM ESTFlexible 8 or 10 hour shifts40 hours per week within the operating timeframeRequired Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Formal training in
ICD 10 CM, ICD 10
PCS, and CPT 4 coding
  • Associates or Bachelor's degree preferred and considered in lieu of experience
  • Minimum of 2 years ICD 10 CM and
ICD 10 PCS
inpatient coding experience at a Level 1 Trauma hospital or 4 years inpatient hospital coding experience
  • 2 to 3 years ambulatory coding experience
  • One of the following active credential required:
  • Certified Coding Specialist CCS
  • ed Health Information Technician RHIT
  • ed Health Information Administrator RHIA
  • Certified Inpatient Coder
