Starting Salary Range:
$19.5350 - $21.4256 per hourBasic Schedule:

Bloomington, IL Position Summary The Accounting Specialist I performs professional accounting and bookkeeping work involving the maintenance of fiscal records, auditing documents, preparing reports, and supporting payroll and revenue-related functions. Responsibilities include medical claims review, reconciliation of receipts and deposits, contract and account record maintenance, and ensuring compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) as well as County and State regulations. Key Responsibilities Maintain and create financial and accounting records, spreadsheets, and files related to County finances and payroll Reconcile batch receipts and deposits, print balance reports, and post receipts Allocate funds appropriately for all monies received Review medical claims for clinic services to ensure accuracy prior to payment submission Investigate and resolve billing discrepancies, denied claims, and related issues Manage employee system access requests for Health Department staff Coordinate provider and network credentialing to support insurance billing compliance Maintain records for Health Department accounts, subscriptions, and contracts Respond to questions regarding department finances, clinic revenue, payroll reports, and accounting procedures Collaborate with peers in similar accounting roles and provide support as needed Perform other related duties as assigned Qualifications Required High school diploma or equivalent 1-3 years of experience in governmental accounting, medical billing and claims management, or an equivalent combination of education and experience Valid Illinois Driver's License Preferred Skills and Experience The ideal candidate will have knowledge of: Accounting principles and practices Medical billing, claims processing, and claim resolution Medical terminology and coding systems Accounting software and spreadsheet applications Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint Local government operations and office procedures Successful candidates will demonstrate the ability to: Perform accounting functions and financial calculations accurately Interpret financial reports and identify discrepancies Research and resolve accounting-related issues Communicate effectively with professionalism and diplomacy Maintain confidentiality with sensitive financial and personnel information Build strong working relationships with colleagues, department leaders, and the public Work Environment This position is primarily sedentary office work performed in a safe and secure environment.
