Job Description
Bookkeeper / Tax Preparer (Part Time) Towson, MD $30 - $50 per hour (20 hours per week) The best bookkeeping roles rarely become available. Usually because the person doing them has no reason to leave. That's exactly the situation here. This small, established CPA firm has built the kind of environment that many people spend years looking for. Flexible hours. Sensible expectations. Interesting work. And a team that genuinely enjoys working together. They're looking for someone to join on a part time basis, around 20 hours per week, supporting both bookkeeping and tax work across a long standing client base. For the right person, this could be the perfect role. Particularly if you're looking for meaningful work without committing to the pace and hours that often come with larger firms. Why they're hiring The firm continues to support a loyal portfolio of clients and wants to ensure they maintain the level of service that has helped them build their reputation over many years. This isn't a newly created department or a business trying to reinvent itself. It's a steady, well run practice looking for someone dependable who can become part of the team long term. The workload is already there. What they need is someone who enjoys getting stuck into the detail and takes pride in producing accurate work. What the role actually looks like The position combines bookkeeping with tax return preparation and assembly, creating a nice mix of responsibilities throughout the year. You'll be involved in: Client bookkeeping work Maintaining financial records Working with QuickBooks and accounting systems Preparing and assembling individual tax returns Assisting with corporate returns Assisting with partnership returns Assisting with trust returns Supporting the wider team during tax season Importantly, they're not looking for someone to be trained from scratch. They'd love someone who already knows their way around bookkeeping and tax preparation and can step in with confidence. Someone who enjoys being the person others can rely on. Why someone would choose this over a larger firm For some people, career success means becoming a Partner. For others, it means finding work that fits around the life they actually want. This role tends to appeal to the second group. Perhaps you've spent years in public accounting and want more flexibility. Perhaps you're returning to work and don't want a full time position. Or perhaps you've simply reached a point where you value balance as much as progression. Whatever the reason, this opportunity offers something many firms struggle to provide. Trust. The leadership team isn't interested in micromanaging people. They want someone capable, dependable, and professional who can manage their workload without unnecessary oversight. The culture in practice The firm is small enough that everybody knows each other and large enough to provide a steady flow of interesting work. Clients have often been with the practice for years. The same is true of many of the employees. That tends to happen when people enjoy where they work. The atmosphere is professional but relaxed. There isn't a corporate feel. There aren't layers of management. People help each other, communicate openly, and focus on doing good work for their clients. Simple, but surprisingly effective. Who tends to thrive here? Usually someone who enjoys being organised, detail oriented, and dependable. Someone who likes the satisfaction that comes from keeping things running smoothly behind the scenes. Most importantly, someone looking for a long term home rather than a temporary stop. Because whilst this is a part time position, the firm is hoping to find someone who becomes a valued part of the team for years to come. Not ready with a resume? Or want a bit more information before applying? That's fine. Apply the old-fashioned way, or simply reach out to me on LinkedIn or through the Distinct Recruitment website. I'll happily talk you through the role, the firm, and where it could take you before you make any commitments. I'm Abigail Stephen, Recruiter at Distinct. I don't just look at job specs; I look at people, and where they'll thrive. It's not about filling gaps. It's about finding a fit that lasts. Outside of work, balance for me is Pilates to reset, travel to explore, and skiing to recharge. Because the truth is, you don't slog through hours for the love of a spreadsheet. You do it for the freedom it buys you. Same principle here.
