POSITION DESCRIPTION JOB TITLE
Accounting Specialist
REPORTS TO
Chief Financial Officer
POSITION OVERVIEW
The Accounting Specialist is responsible for supporting the financial operations of the Council of Community Services by maintaining accurate financial records, processing payroll, and ensuring compliance with nonprofit accounting standards. This role requires strong attention to detail, proficiency in accounting software, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a mission-driven environment.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts Process accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions Assist with the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports Support audit preparation and provide documentation as needed Ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting principles and regulatory requirements Prepare semi-monthly payroll in a timely and accurate manner Maintain employee payroll records, including taxes, deductions, and benefits Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll regulations Coordinate with HR on employee changes, onboarding, and offboarding Utilize QuickBooks for daily accounting activities, including journal entries and reporting Maintain and update financial records within accounting systems Assist with grant tracking and reporting requirements Prepare internal financial summaries for leadership Maintain documentation for compliance with nonprofit and funding requirements
REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES
: Thorough knowledge of accounting practices, processes, and procedures of a non-profit organization Proficiency in QuickBooks Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, formulas, data analysis)
CORE COMPETENCIES
: Strong attention to detail and accuracy Excellent organizational and time-management skills Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive financial and employee information Strong communication and collaboration skills Ability to work independently and meet deadlines
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
: Associate or bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred 2-5 years of accounting experience, preferably in a nonprofit environment Experience with payroll systems and accounting software

Full-time, non-exempt
