Job Description

The bookkeeper is responsible for managing and processing all payroll and related financial activities for the organization. This position ensures employees are paid accurately and on time, payroll taxes and filings are completed in compliance with federal and state regulations, and financial records are maintained with accuracy and confidentiality. In addition to payroll responsibilities, the bookkeeper supports the organization's daily financial operations by processing accounts payable, posting daily receipts, preparing and making bank deposits, reconciling bank accounts, and maintaining accurate donation records. This role also assists with donor stewardship by preparing and sending donation acknowledgements in a timely and professional manner. The ideal candidate is highly organized, detail-oriented, trustworthy, and able to manage multiple financial tasks in a fast-paced nonprofit environment while supporting the mission of animal welfare and community service. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Prepare and process regular payroll for all employees using Sage 50 accounting software Calculate and remit payroll taxes and complete required payroll filings Maintain payroll records and ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations Process accounts payable invoices and vendor payments Post daily receipts and prepare bank deposits Reconcile bank accounts and assist with monthly financial reporting Track and record incoming donations and maintain accurate donor records Prepare and send donor acknowledgement letters and receipts Maintain confidentiality of financial, payroll, donor, and employee information Assist with audits and provide financial documentation as requested Support general office and administrative financial functions as needed Qualifications Minimum of 2 years of experience in payroll processing, bookkeeping, or accounting required Associates degree in accounting, bookkeeping, finance or related field preferred. Knowledge of payroll tax requirements and accounting principles Proficiency with accounting software (Sage 50 and Shelterluv), spreadsheets, and office systems Experience with spreadsheets and Microsoft Office programs, especially Excel Strong organizational skills and attention to detail Strong written and verbal communication skills Ability to manage sensitive information with confidentiality Ability to work independently and prioritize multiple responsibilities Experience in nonprofit accounting is a plus The ideal candidate will be dependable, detail-oriented, organized, and capable of managing multiple financial responsibilities in a fast-paced nonprofit environment while maintaining professionalism and confidentiality. Because of the nature of nonprofit shelter work, the ideal candidate must be flexible, adaptable, and willing to assist with a variety of organizational needs as they arise. The ability to work collaboratively in a mission-driven environment and support the overall goals of animal welfare and community service is essential.
Pay:
$20.00 - $24.00 per hour
