Some organizations need a financial executive who spends most of their time reviewing reports prepared by others. Hope Haven needs a CFO who enjoys being in the work. Our next CFO will serve as the organization's financial expert, strategic advisor, educator, and problem-solver. One hour you may be discussing strategy with the CEO or presenting to the Board. The next hour you may be helping a colleague understand a contract, find a mistake someone made that is keeping an account from reconciling, or working through a complicated accounting question. This role is ideal for someone who loves nonprofit finance, enjoys translating complex concepts into plain language, and is energized by improving things rather than simply maintaining them. We are looking for experience, judgment, curiosity, and integrity. The ideal candidate has enough confidence in their expertise to engage in productive disagreement and enough security in themselves to know that being respectfully questioned, and sometimes being wrong, is simply part of doing meaningful work.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Financial Leadership & Strategy Lead the annual budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning processes in partnership with the CEO and leadership team. Monitor organizational financial performance and provide timely analysis of trends, risks, opportunities, and strategic considerations. Develop financial models, forecasts, and business cases to support organizational decision-making, program development, and capital investments. Prepare and present meaningful financial reports and recommendations to the CEO, Board of Directors, and Finance Committee. Serve as a strategic thought partner to leadership, helping evaluate opportunities through both a mission and financial lens. Accounting, Compliance & Stewardship Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), nonprofit accounting standards, donor restrictions, grant requirements, and applicable federal, state, and local regulations. Lead the annual audit, Form 990 preparation, agreed-upon procedures, workers compensation audit, payroll tax filings, and related financial reviews in coordination with external partners. Maintain effective internal controls, accounting policies, and financial procedures that safeguard organizational assets. Oversee month-end and year-end close activities, financial reporting, general ledger integrity, reconciliations, and financial statement preparation. Ensure accurate accounting and reporting of restricted and unrestricted funds, grants, contracts, financial assistance programs, and other funding sources. Operational Partnership Partner with program, development, administrative, and operational teams to support effective financial management across the organization. Assist leaders in developing and monitoring budgets, understanding financial reports, and evaluating operational decisions. Support the development and management of grant and contract budgets, reimbursement processes, and reporting requirements. Provide financial guidance and education to colleagues across the organization, translating complex concepts into practical and understandable language. Systems & Process Improvement Evaluate, implement, and continuously improve financial systems, reporting tools, workflows, and internal processes. Leverage technology and data to improve efficiency, accuracy, decision-making, and organizational effectiveness. Identify opportunities to simplify processes, reduce risk, strengthen controls, and improve the user experience for both staff and families. Leadership & Development Foster strong cross-functional relationships and productive collaboration between finance and other departments. Contribute to a culture of curiosity, continuous improvement, stewardship, and responsible decision-making. Perform other duties as assigned in support of Hope Haven's mission and strategic objectives.
REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible accounting, finance, or financial leadership experience. Minimum of 5 years of experience in a nonprofit organization with responsibility for budgeting, financial reporting, audits, compliance, and financial oversight. Demonstrated experience leading annual audits and working directly with external auditors, tax preparers, payroll providers, and other financial partners. Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting, fund accounting, restricted and unrestricted revenue, grants management, financial controls, budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting. Experience presenting financial information to executive leadership, boards of directors, finance committees, or other governing bodies. Ability to analyze complex situations, exercise sound judgment, and translate financial concepts into practical guidance for non-financial audiences. Experience using financial management systems, spreadsheets, reporting tools, and technology to improve organizational effectiveness. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, navigate ambiguity, and adapt to changing organizational needs. Commitment to integrity, stewardship, accountability, and mission-driven work.
