Position Overview We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Customs Specialist to join our Houston-based team. In this role, you will be responsible for managing all aspects of import and export compliance, ensuring seamless customs clearance for our global shipments. This is a high-impact opportunity for a trade compliance professional looking to own and develop an in-house customs function. Key Responsibilities Review and track import/export documentation including commercial invoices, bills of lading, packing lists, certificates of origin, and Shippers Export Declarations (SEDs). Ensure compliance with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) regulations. Coordinate ISF (Importer Security Filing) with importers and brokers to ensure timely and accurate submission prior to vessel departure. Handle CBP holds, exams, FDA/OGA clearances, and customs-related discrepancies to minimize shipment delays. Coordinate with licensed customs brokers and freight forwarders to facilitate timely cargo clearance and on-time deliveries. Classify goods using Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) codes and Schedule B numbers with a high degree of accuracy. Determine applicable duty rates and trade program eligibility (USMCA, GSP, etc.) and identify duty drawback opportunities. Monitor changes in U.S. tariff schedules, Section 301/232 tariffs, and trade policy updates; communicate impact to leadership. Support binding ruling requests and classification of dispute resolution with CBP as needed. Analyze tariffs and duties paid across shipments; prepare clear, accurate reports and summaries for management to support cost visibility, budget planning, and trade compliance decision-making. Assist in the development and maintenance of internal customs compliance programs, policies, and SOPs. Respond to CBP inquiries, prior disclosures, and audit requests; support post-entry reviews and reconciliation filings. Monitor changes in U.S. trade policy and sanctions regimes and communicate impact to relevant stakeholders Serve as the primary liaison with licensed customs brokers, freight forwarders, and government agencies (CBP) to ensure compliant and timely clearance. Liaise with relevant government agencies as required. Provide guidance to internal stakeholders on import/export regulations, documentation requirements, and compliance with best practices. Coordinate inbound and outbound international shipments via ocean, air, and ground freight. Track shipments and proactively resolve customs-related holds or discrepancies with carriers or suppliers. Support Incoterms review and ensure shipping contracts reflect accurate trade terms from a compliance perspective. Partner with procurement, warehouse, and finance teams to resolve trade compliance issues and support new product launches. Qualifications Education Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain, Logistics, International Business, Business Administration, or a related field preferred Professional Experience 3-5+ years of direct experience in customs brokerage, customs entry writing, or trade compliance - brokerage-side experience strongly preferred. Experience working with customs brokers, freight forwarders, and transportation providers Skills Strong working knowledge of U.S. import/export regulations (CBP, OFAC). Proficiency with HTS classification, duty drawback analysis, and free trade agreement evaluation (USMCA, GSP). Familiarity with ACE (Automated Commercial Environment) portal and CBP e-filing systems. Familiarity with international trade and logistics networks. Advanced Excel skills with the ability to analyze data, build reports, and present duty/tariff summaries to management. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel). Preferred Qualifications Licensed U.S. Customs Broker (CBP License) strongly preferred. Certified Customs Specialist (CCS) or Certified Export Specialist (CES) designation. Experience with automotive or heavy industrial commodity shipments. Bilingual is a plus.
