Job Description

Johnson Service Group (JSG), a nationally recognized recruiting firm, is currently seeking an Import Specialist for a respected customs brokerage client in Norfolk, Virginia. Position Summary The Import Specialist plays a key role in supporting the import operations team by ensuring the timely and compliant movement of goods through U.S. Customs. This position offers an excellent opportunity to develop expertise in customs brokerage, international trade compliance, and import logistics while working alongside experienced Customs Brokers and industry professionals. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, customer-focused, and eager to build a career in global trade, customs compliance, and supply chain operations. Key Responsibilities Review import documentation, including commercial invoices, bills of lading, packing lists, certificates of origin, and other shipping records to ensure accuracy and compliance with U.S. Customs regulations. Enter and maintain import shipment data within customs clearance systems and internal databases with a high degree of accuracy. Coordinate with clients, freight carriers, government agencies, and internal teams to facilitate the smooth clearance and delivery of imported goods. Provide exceptional customer service by responding to client inquiries, addressing shipment concerns, and communicating shipment status updates. Maintain a working knowledge of Customs regulations, tariff classifications, trade agreements, and import compliance requirements. Collaborate closely with Customs Brokers and operations personnel to support daily import activities and meet customer deadlines. Investigate and resolve issues related to import documentation, Customs clearance delays, and transportation challenges. Participate in ongoing training and professional development opportunities to expand knowledge of customs brokerage procedures, trade regulations, and industry best practices. Assist with special projects and additional duties as assigned. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Business, Supply Chain, International Trade, Logistics, or a related field preferred. Previous experience in customer service, logistics, transportation, import/export operations, or data entry is preferred. Strong attention to detail and exceptional organizational skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook. Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced environment. Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking abilities. Willingness to learn and remain current on Customs regulations and international trade requirements. Prior customs brokerage experience or knowledge of import/export processes is beneficial but not required.
