The University is located in New Haven, a city rich with arts and culture, and less than 90 miles from New York City and 140 miles from Boston. The Assistant Director of Accounting is responsible for complex accounting functions and financial reporting. Provides functional support using a wide variety of accounting and financial systems as assigned. Provides guidance to university staff regarding accounting and reporting issues, and the appropriate use of automated financial systems to encourage consistent recording and reporting of financial transactions according to Board of Regents and Southern Connecticut State University policy as well as state and federal statutes. May lead professional staff of a lower grade and/or support staff as assigned. Position Responsibilities Reconciles and monitors university funds with State Controller records and bank records. Acts as a resource for other staff personnel when performing their reconciliations. Works closely with the Office of Sponsored Programs and Research (SPAR), campus grant administrators, the Financial Aid department and federal and state regulators and auditors in successfully meeting all grant and student financial aid reporting and financial processing needs. Works with Financial Aid to establish and monitor payroll for grants related to work-study transactions ensuring unallowable payroll expenditures are moved to the correct home department. Posts monthly journal entries posting expenditures to the appropriate grant accounts for all grant-related transactions and produces invoices utilizing Core-CT as well as reconciliation between Core-CT and Banner. Prepares and processes cash drawdowns, deposits, and transfers of funds in compliance with grant and financial aid requirements allowing the university to realize optimal cash management. Ensures timely and accurate filing of internal and external financial reports, including required federal and state reports. Creates various reports to assist university departments. Meets the financial information needs of the university community, System Office, regulatory agencies and other external parties. Acts as a general resource person for finance system inquiries. Administers the university's bond funds including setup, reconciliation and close out. Assists in financial closing activities and performs year-end accounting in all funds. Under the supervision of the Director or Controller, ensures compliance with applicable tax reporting and regulatory requirements for the university. Includes sales and use tax reporting, monitoring taxable transactions, ensuring timely and accurate filings in accordance with state regulations. Additionally, supports international tax compliance including the calculation, reporting, and filing of IRS form 1042 and related withholding requirements. Participates (provides information, answers inquiries, etc.) in financial audits including those made by state, federal and private audit firms. Assists in the maintenance of the university's chart of accounts and review of financial procedures, policies and internal control. Performs duties related to those enumerated above, which do not alter the basic level of position responsibility. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field. Master's degree preferred. Four (4) years of experiencein accounting in the areas of preparation of financial statements, finance experience in a non-profit or public organization, and experience in the evaluation of accounting systems, policies and procedures. Ability to utilize various financial and accounting systems. Excellent interpersonal, communication skills, organizational and leadership skills. Extensive experience in the use of MS Office; specifically, Excel with strong analytical skills. Experience and ability to extract and build reports with query software. Credentials and/or experience substantially comparable to the above may also be considered.
