Description Robert Half Management Resources is partnering with a San Diego-based, project-driven organization (construction-focused) seeking an interim Director of Project Accounting to step in and drive operational improvements, strengthen processes, and lead a high-performing team. This is a 4-6 month engagement, with a heavier on-site presence upfront, transitioning to a more flexible/remote cadence over time. Position Overview Reporting to the SVP & Controller, the Director of Project Accounting will lead and enhance project accounting operations, driving efficiency, accuracy, and cross-functional alignment. This leader will bring a strong blend of technical accounting expertise, operational leadership, and process improvement focus. Key Responsibilities Strong focus on projects around Sales & Use tax, Inventory, tariff compliance, unique project considerations (cancellations, customer bankruptcies) Partner cross-functionally with Project Controls, Construction, and Operations to design and optimize accounting processes while ensuring strong internal controls Lead month-end close for project accounting, including WIP, job cost accruals, reserves, underbillings, deferred revenue, and joint ventures Support quarter-end flux / variance analysis tied to project performance Oversee complex balance sheet reconciliations and non-standard journal entries Manage, mentor, and review the work of the project accounting team Assist in the preparation of financial statements in accordance with US GAAP Identify issues proactively and implement process improvements and operational efficiencies Support audit readiness and coordination with external auditors Assist with due diligence efforts and special projects as needed Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance 10+ years of progressive accounting experience Strong project-based accounting experience within construction or similar industries Expertise in: Revenue recognition (ASC 606) Change orders, contracts, cost-to-complete estimates WIP accounting, reserves, claims, and settlements Experience in multi-entity and consolidated environments Ability to manage multiple complex projects (Lump Sum, GMP, T& M) Experience overseeing audits and working with external auditors Exposure to CMiC and/or Textura (ideal but not required) CPA strongly preferred Preferred Background Construction industry with percentage-of-completion accounting Big 4 or large public accounting experience Strong Excel / MS Office skills

- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance.
- At least 10 years of progressively responsible accounting experience, including leadership within complex accounting environments.
- Strong background in project-based accounting within construction or a closely related industry.
- Demonstrated knowledge of US GAAP, including revenue recognition under ASC 606 and accounting for contracts, change orders, cost-to-complete estimates, reserves, claims, and settlements.
- Experience managing accounting across multiple entities, including consolidated reporting responsibilities.
- Proven ability to oversee complex project portfolios involving structures such as lump sum, guaranteed maximum price, or time-and-materials arrangements.
- Prior involvement with audits and collaboration with external auditors.
- Familiarity with CMiC, Textura, and advanced Excel or broader Microsoft Office tools is preferred.
