At this stage, you're not just changing roles, you're choosing the environment you're going to build the next chapter of your career in. For many people, it's the place they'll either grow into Partner… or eventually retire from. So the decision carries a different weight. That's why leadership matters so much here. The Managing Partner of this firm is very intentional about that. His view is simple but quite rare in practice: people spend around 80% of their waking hours at work, so leadership has a responsibility to make that time meaningful, not just productive. Or in his own words, it's about being a good custodian of that time, helping people do work that's fulfilling while also supporting their personal goals. That creates space to actually take time off in the off-season, rather than deferring your life for half the year. Beyond the broader lifestyle and culture, the day-to-day work still has to stack up. This is a mid-sized firm with a client base and technical complexity that feels closer to a Top 10 environment. You're not stepping away from challenging work, if anything, you're still operating at a high level, with exposure to sophisticated clients more commonly associated with Big 4 firms. At Director level, the role is genuinely client-facing and advisory-led. You'll be involved in tax strategy, entity structuring, and broader consulting work, acting as a trusted advisor rather than just a reviewer or approver of work underneath you. There's also flexibility in how you shape your focus. Some Directors lean into niche specialisms, others prefer a broader portfolio, the firm is open to both depending on how you like to operate.
