At this stage, you're not just changing roles, you're choosing the environment you're going to build the next chapter of your career in. For many people, it's the place they'll either grow into Partner… or eventually retire from. So the decision carries a different weight. That's why leadership matters so much here. The Managing Partner of this firm is very intentional about that. His view is simple but quite rare in practice: people spend around 80% of their waking hours at work, so leadership has a responsibility to make that time meaningful, not just productive. Or in his own words, it's about being a good custodian of that time, helping people do work that's fulfilling while also supporting their personal goals. You don't come across that mindset often at this level. Culturally, the Houston office reflects that thinking. There's a real sense of togetherness, people working hard, but working together, with a shared focus on doing right by clients and by each other. Work-life balance is always talked about in public accounting, but here it's framed more realistically. This is still above a standard 40-hour week, but the intensity is structured. Busy season doesn't properly kick in until the end of February, and importantly, it doesn't spill endlessly into the summer the way it can elsewhere. There's also a flexible approach to how work gets done, whether that's being around for school pick-ups, or stepping out to catch a football game when life calls for it. And critically, even at Director level, busy season is contained rather than consuming. That creates space to actually take time off in the off-season, rather than deferring your life for half the year. Beyond the broader lifestyle and culture, the day-to-day work still has to stack up. This is a mid-sized firm with a client base and technical complexity that feels closer to a Top 10 environment. You're not stepping away from challenging work, if anything, you're still operating at a high level, with exposure to sophisticated clients more commonly associated with Big 4 firms. At Director level, the role is genuinely client-facing and advisory-led. You'll be involved in tax strategy, entity structuring, and broader consulting work, acting as a trusted advisor rather than just a reviewer or approver of work underneath you. There's also flexibility in how you shape your focus. Some Directors lean into niche specialisms, others prefer a broader portfolio, the firm is open to both depending on how you like to operate. A few key elements of the role: Director-level position within a mid-size but highly sophisticated tax practice Strong emphasis on advisory work: entity planning, tax strategy, and client consulting High-quality client base with complexity comparable to Top 10 / Big 4 environments Culture built around collaboration, shared success, and leadership accountability Managing Partner with a clear focus on work-life sustainability and meaningful work Busy season structured from end of February, with no extended summer drag Flexible working approach, including personal-life-friendly scheduling where needed Option to specialise or remain a generalist depending on preference The reality here is that this isn't just a technical step up, it's a leadership environment where the tone is set from the top, and where the expectation is that you build something sustainable for yourself as well as for the firm. If you're at the point where the next move needs to feel like a long-term landing spot rather than just another step, this is worth a closer look. Resume not ready? Unsure whether a move is right, right now? That's completely normal. Career decisions take time. Call Laura on 512-647-2214. She'll share insight recruiters rarely do, what the role really involves, how the firm operates behind the scenes, and whether it genuinely supports your long-term ambitions. No pressure. Just clarity before you decide.
