The Director, Accounting Special Projects will serve as a senior project leader across the Accounting organization. Fervo Energy is building the most cost-effective, repeatable geothermal power plants in the world. DESCRIPTION
The Director, Accounting Special Projects will serve as a senior project leader across the Accounting organization. This person will coordinate cross-functional and cross-advisor workstreams, drive accountability across deadlines, and convert ambiguous transformation needs into executable plans, documented processes, and measurable outcomes. The role requires strong accounting judgment, project management discipline, executive communication, and a vision for operational improvement. Fervo is scaling rapidly, so this role requires strong ownership, crisp communication, a controls mindset, and the ability to partner effectively across Accounting, Finance, Operations, Legal, Tax, Treasury, Commercial, and external advisors. This role will report directly into the CAO organization and will help build the operating model needed for Fervo's next stage of growth.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Transformation Program Leadership Lead accounting transformation initiatives, including Workiva, Vena, FloQast , Quorum, close management improvements, AP/OpenInvoice automation, and related system/process implementations
Create project plans, milestones, owners, dependencies, issue logs, executive updates, and decision points for major accounting initiatives
Drive cross-functional alignment across Accounting, Finance Systems, IT, FP&A, Treasury, Tax, Operations, Legal, Commercial, and external advisors
Build a standard project tracker and governance cadence for close and reporting deadlines
Partner with Finance and other departments on strategic initiatives and transactions, including capital markets activity, M&A, financings, and other cross-functional efforts requiring accounting leadership SOX, Controls and Process Documentation Lead SOX readiness workstreams to support controls being substantially operational by year-end 2026
Partner with internal audit, external auditors and advisors, and process owners to document processes, risks, controls, evidence expectations, and remediation plans
Review process maps, desktop procedures, narratives, and control documentation for priority accounting cycles
Ensure documentation is practical, audit-ready, and embedded into recurring workpapers Audit, Advisor and Continuous Improvement Management Coordinate audit and advisor workstreams across multiple audits, quarterly reviews, standalone financial statements, and special accounting projects
Manage advisor spend visibility, workstream ownership, deliverable quality, and transition plans to bring recurring work in house over time
Maintain a continuous improvement backlog and help teams use AI and automation responsibly to improve documentation, analysis, and close execution
QUALIFICATIONS
Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, Information Systems, or related field
10+ years of progressive accounting, audit, controls, finance transformation, project management, or accounting operations experience
Demonstrated experience leading complex cross-functional projects with multiple stakeholders, dependencies, and executive visibility
Strong understanding of accounting close, financial reporting, audit support, internal controls, and process documentation
Ability to translate ambiguous problems into project plans, process maps, control designs, and operational routines
Strong executive communication skills and ability to influence without relying solely on formal authority
High ownership mindset, comfort with change, and ability to balance strategic roadmap work with hands-on execution
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
CPA, CIA, PMP, Lean Six Sigma, or similar credential preferred
Big Four, consulting, internal audit, SOX, IPO readiness, or finance transformation experience
Experience implementing Workiva, Vena, FloQast, Quorum, ERP, AP automation, or reconciliation tools
Experience in energy, infrastructure, renewable power, project finance, or multi-entity public-company environments
Experience reducing reliance on external advisors by building internal processes, training, and ownership models
LOCATION
Fervo Energy is headquartered in Houston, TX. This position requires regular in-office presence at our Houston office, with eligibility to participate in the Company's hybrid work policy.
