Job Description

Posting Details The New Mexico Department of Public Safety (DPS) is the State's leading law enforcement agency with a $220 million budget and 1,350+ employees assigned throughout the State. The Special Projects Unit in the Administrative Services Division (ASD) is a new Unit created to manage recurring, new, and one-time projects and Initiatives for distribution to eligible law enforcement and other agencies throughout the State. Why does the job exist? The State Projects Accountant/Auditor plays a vital role in ensuring accountability and transparency of state-funded initiatives such as the Law Enforcement Retention Fund (LERF), Governor Executive Orders, and special appropriations. This position works in close partnership with state and local law enforcement agencies, supporting efforts to strengthen retention, reduce crime, and enhance warrant enforcement. In addition to financial oversight, auditing, and budgeting, this role contributes to the development of program policies and procedures and is an opportunity for a candidate who can bring forward innovative ideas to improve processes, enhance efficiency, and strengthen program outcomes. How does it get done? This position Is responsible for auditing applications to the Law Enforcement Retention Fund, currently authorized through FY 2026, as well as managing special appropriations and other disbursements to law enforcement agencies throughout the State to include: 1
  • Auditing disbursements to the New Mexico State Police, Including validating data, auditing expenditures, reconciling revenues, and preparing monthly expenditure reports; 2
  • Auditing disbursements to other law enforcement agencies, including validating data, preparing invoices, issuing and tracking warrants, reconciling payments, and ensuring timely follow-up on outstanding Items. 3
  • Reviewing, monitoring, reconciling and auditing awards and disbursements. 4
  • Prepare monthly and closing journal to reconcile accounts; 5
  • Conducts compliance audits with the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy's Acadis database, DPS Law Enforcement Records Bureau National Incident Based Reporting System (NIBRS), and the Death In Custody Reporting Act (DCRA); 6
  • Provide customer service to internal and external customers; and 7
  • Assist with the compilation of data for annual reports to the Office of the Governor, Department of Finance and Administration, Legislative Finance Committee and elected Legislators.

Minimum Qualification Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, Auditing, or Business Administration and two (2) years directly related work experience in accounting, auditing, finance, and/or budgeting. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) years may substitute for the required education and experience. Employment Requirements Employment is subject to a pre-employment background investigation and fingerprinting in accordance with all terms and conditions of federal and state law, rules and regulations; and is conditional pending results. Continued employment is contingent upon remaining felony free, per Section 5.12.1.1 of the Criminal Justice Information Systems Security Policy. Candidates must possess and maintain a valid driver's license, along with a current State of New Mexico Defensive Driving Certificate (or complete the Defensive Driving Course within six (6) months of hire). Local travel Is required, with potential for in-state travel. Overtime may be required to meet deadlines, manage peak workloads, respond to urgent requests, and support the legislative session. Working Conditions Work is performed in a fast-paced law enforcement office setting with exposure to armed law enforcement personnel and confidential information. Extensive use of desktop/laptop computer with multiple visual/video display terminals(VDT). Extensive use of agency-Issued cell phone. Ability to operate multipurpose copier/scanner/fax machines.
