Job Title:
Financial Analyst (Consultant) - Healthcare Finance This Financial Analyst consultant role supports a large academic health system's hospital finance team by providing full-time, high-level financial analysis and reporting across multiple service lines. You will step into a fast-paced, complex environment to backfill and supplement an already lean team, ensuring accurate financial reporting, robust variance analysis, and timely support for leadership during a period of ongoing cost-savings initiatives. This is a 6‑month, full-time contract position with the potential to apply and interview for permanent vacancies during the assignment. Responsibilities Support 1-2 clinical or operational service lines at a time, such as Oncology, Pharmacy, Food Services, Orthopedics, or Spine, and flex across service lines as needed to support 5-6 existing Financial Analysts. Research and explain variances in financial results, including revenue, expenses, and other key metrics, and clearly communicate findings to leadership in a simple and succinct manner. Participate in and support the month-end close process, including preparing and posting journal entries and validating account balances. Research and analyze budgets, including operational and capital budgets, to support planning, forecasting, and decision-making. Prepare dashboards and customized financial reports for senior leadership, tailoring content and visuals to address specific questions and initiatives. Run cost data and perform ad hoc financial analyses to support special projects and cost-savings initiatives across the health system. Pull and analyze data queries from the EPSI costing system and other financial systems to support detailed costing and profitability analyses. Conduct onsite inventory counts approximately twice per year and contribute to related reconciliations and reporting. Plan, develop, and coordinate the preparation of financial analyses and reports, including financial statements, statistical reports, cost analyses, and other financial information. Maintain close liaison with business unit financial managers to advise on financial position, cash flows, accounts, budgets, budget requests, and related financial matters. Supervise, coordinate, and participate in the preparation of various financial reports and analyses for senior leadership and external agencies as needed. Assist in the development, implementation, and management of financial systems, cost accounting systems, and financial policies and procedures. Respond promptly to frequent questions from leadership regarding financial performance, cost trends, and budget status, providing clear, data-driven explanations. Collaborate with a panel of finance managers and directors and present analytical findings effectively, including formal presentation of analytics assessments. Maintain a high level of accuracy in all reporting and analyses, meet deadlines for ad hoc presentations and reports, and demonstrate strong professional communication in all interactions. Essential Skills At least 7 years of accounting experience, including general accounting, GAAP accounting, cost accounting, financial management, journal entries, and month-end close. Bachelor's degree (4-year) in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or Business Administration. Advanced Microsoft Excel proficiency, including pivot tables, VLOOKUP, and other advanced functions; willingness and ability to complete Excel testing prior to interview. Proven experience in financial analysis and financial reporting in a fast-paced, complex organization. Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex financial data and translate it into actionable insights. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain financial information clearly to non-financial stakeholders at all levels. Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision while managing multiple priorities and deadlines. Comfort working in a high-volume, high-expectation environment that mirrors a large academic hospital or similarly complex organization. Additional Skills & Qualifications Accounting experience with a large public accounting firm is highly desirable but not required. Experience with taxes and auditing is preferred but not required. Experience in large, complex organizations, particularly in healthcare or academic environments, is an advantage. Familiarity with cost accounting systems and hospital costing tools such as EPSI is beneficial. Experience preparing financial reports and analyses for senior leadership and external agencies. Experience assisting with the development and implementation of financial systems, cost accounting systems, and financial policies and procedures. Strong presentation skills, including the ability to present analytical assessments to a panel of finance leaders. Professional certifications such as CPA are not required but may be viewed favorably. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Durham, NC. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $29.69 - $52.39/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
