Job Title:
Financial Analyst III Job Description The Financial Analyst III plays a key role in developing, analyzing, and coordinating complex financial information to support a large, fast-paced academic health system environment. This role focuses on operational and capital budgeting, financial reporting, performance analysis, and strategic planning, with significant exposure to high-growth pharmacy service lines and specialized hospital programs. The position offers the opportunity to influence system-level decisions through rigorous analysis, clear communication, and close partnership with leadership and operational stakeholders. Responsibilities Develop, analyze, and coordinate the preparation of financial analyses and reports, including operational and capital budgets, financial statements, statistical reports, cost analyses, and other specialized financial information. Perform complex and specialized financial assignments in areas such as cost accounting, financial management, and month-end close activities. Maintain close liaison with business unit financial managers to advise on financial position, cash flows, accounts, budgets, budget requests, and related financial matters. Coordinate and participate in the preparation of financial reports and analyses for leadership and external agencies, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and clarity. Collaborate with Corporate Finance and General Accounting to coordinate monthly journal entries and provide a comprehensive understanding of income statement transactions. Compile and analyze key performance indicators, prepare and review monthly performance dashboards, and perform variance analysis and other month-end close procedures. Assist in the development, implementation, and management of financial systems, cost accounting systems, and financial policies and procedures. Prepare ad-hoc financial analyses as needed to support decision-making, including department margin reviews, business plans, and special projects. Support the annual cycle counts of perpetual inventories, including onsite participation in inventory counts twice per year. Execute monthly responsibilities during the first seven business days, including full participation in the month-end close process, ensuring books close by Day 5 and supporting preparation for leadership presentations by Day 7. During the remainder of each month, compile, analyze, and distribute financial reporting, perform ad-hoc analyses, support quarterly and ad-hoc forecasting, and build financial models for business plans and special initiatives. Provide ongoing financial analysis and support for Contract Pharmacy, Retail Pharmacy, and Inpatient/Outpatient Hospital Pharmacy, with a focus on high-growth and complex service lines. Contribute to seasonal and annual strategic financial planning activities, including the development and forecasting of the Strategic Financial Plan with significant emphasis on Retail and Contract Pharmacy. Prepare and support quarterly reporting and analysis for specialized service lines such as Heart & Transplant, including detailed service line reporting. Support completion of required healthcare financial surveys during the spring-summer period, ensuring accurate and timely submissions. Assist with Hospital License Application surveys and related reporting during the fall/winter period. Participate in the annual budget cycle, beginning after Strategic Financial Plan submission and continuing through spring, including intensive work during the January-May peak workload period. Manage workload effectively during peak budget season, typically working 40-50 hours per week, while maintaining high-quality financial analysis and reporting. Communicate findings, insights, and recommendations clearly to leadership and cross-functional partners, translating complex financial data into actionable information. Essential Skills At least 6 years of experience in accounting and finance, including general accounting, GAAP accounting, cost accounting, financial management, journal entries, and month-end close. Bachelor's degree (4-year) in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or Business Administration. Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables, VLOOKUP, and other advanced functions (macro development not required). Ability to successfully complete Excel testing prior to interview. Strong communication skills with the ability to present complex financial information clearly and persuasively. Strong analytical skills with a proven ability to interpret financial data, identify trends, and perform detailed variance and performance analysis. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while managing multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Demonstrated initiative, ownership, and accountability for assigned work. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience with large or complex organizations, particularly those with a pace similar to public accounting or major health systems, is highly desirable. Prior experience with a Big Four public accounting firm is highly desirable but not required. Experience with taxes and auditing is preferred but not required. Experience using AI tools (such as Co-Pilot or similar technologies) to build or support Excel-based solutions and agents is highly preferred. Familiarity with SAP, Microsoft Teams, EPIC (Maestro), and Oracle Essbase is preferred but not required. Experience in healthcare finance, including pharmacy financial analysis, service line reporting, and healthcare financial surveys, is advantageous. Experience supporting strategic financial planning, budgeting cycles, and forecasting processes is a plus. Demonstrated ability to take initiative, act as a self-starter, and drive tasks to completion. Work Environment This role operates in a predominantly remote work environment, with approximately 95% of work performed offsite. Team members should expect to work Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with additional hours (typically 40-50 hours per week) during the January-May peak budget cycle. The position requires onsite presence in specific situations, including participation in inventory counts twice a year and during any labor crisis, as well as concentrated onsite work 2-3 days per week for a few weeks each quarter (approximately 9-12 days onsite per quarter).
