Job Description

Position Overview KU research at the University of Kansas addresses problems of worldwide significance and delivers solutions that make a difference to Kansas and the region. The Office of Research facilitates that mission by advocating for research, scholarship and creative activity, implementing research integrity requirements, and, through the KU Center for Research (KUCR), managing the administration of research grants and contracts. KU Research also has oversight of activities related to technology commercialization and business and industry outreach. KU's research centers are recognized as University Research Centers and report to the Office of Research. The Office of Research also provides core research lab services for university investigators. Each lab has experienced professionals and state-of-the-art technology to support researchers throughout their research projects. KU Center for Research, Inc. (KUCR), a non-profit 501(c)3 research foundation, operates for the benefit of the university under the administrative jurisdiction of the KU Office of Research. The Office of Research is responsible for submitting all proposals for external support of research, instructional and service awards and helps research investigators by negotiating contracts, providing proposal and post-award services, administering compliance oversight, managing and constructing research facilities, and handling financial services, including investment of corporation resources. The Financial Analyst Intermediate position plays a key role in the preparation and analysis of the KUCR's quarterly and year-end financial statements, including the Statement of Financial Position (Balance Sheet) and Statement of Activities (Income Statement). Working close with the Chief Financial Officer, Associate Director of Financial Reporting, and other finance leadership, this role is responsible for detailed account analysis and preparing journal entries for accruals, reclassifications, eliminations, and other accounting adjustments necessary to ensure the accuracy and completeness of the KUCR financial statements. The ideal candidate has strong accounting fundamentals, excellent analytical skills, and a commitment to high-quality financial reporting. Financial Statements, Reporting, and Analysis:
Analyze general ledger accounts and prepare journal entries for accruals, reclassifications, eliminations, and other adjustments during the financial close process. Assist with preparation of quarterly and auditable year-end financial statements, including drafting financial statements and footnotes included within. Support internal and external audit processes by researching accounting issues, documenting conclusions, and ensuring compliance and accuracy. Research, interpret and make determinations on contracts related to revenue recognition. Maintain Filemaker Pro database used for contract analysis in support of preparing the financial statements. Perform detailed financial data analysis to identify trends, discrepancies, and reporting issues. Support and drive continuous improvement of financial reporting processes and capabilities, while ensuring compliance with applicable financial governance and internal control frameworks. 25% -
General Ledger Integrity:
Manage monthly accounting period close to ensure accuracy and completeness of ledgers. Perform GL account reconciliations, investigate discrepancies, and take corrective action. Analyze intercompany accounts, prepare offsetting entries, and ensure balances are properly recorded and reconciled. Collaborate with internal teams, including Cash Management, on routine and special accounting projects. 5% - Other Duties as
Assigned:
Assist with special accounting projects and analyses within Financial Services as assigned by management. Participate in initiatives to improve financial reporting processes and internal controls. Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities, reviewing professional publications, maintaining professional networks, and engaging professional organizations. Ensure accounting procedures conform to generally accepted accounting principles and comply with the Center's accounting policies and practices. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Business Administration or Finance OR Bachelor's degree in another field with coursework in Accounting. Three (3) years of recent accounting or finance experience. Previous experience requiring efficiency in Microsoft Excel. Strong analytical and problem solving skills with the ability to interpret financial data as required by previous experience. Preferred Qualifications Degree in Accounting. Experience preparing or supporting financial statements and audit processes. Advanced Excel skill (pivot tables, complex formulas, data modification and analysis) as required by previous experience. Demonstrated knowledge of
U.S. GAAP
as evidenced by application materials. Experience with fund accounting or university finance environments.
