Description Robert Half is recruiting for an interim Accounting Manager / Consultant for our client in the City Government and public sector industry. The interim Accounting Manager provides leadership and oversight of governmental accounting operations, with a strong emphasis on GASB compliance. This role manages accounting staff, supports audits and closings, and advises leadership on fiscal and regulatory matters. This opportunity will be located onsite in Downey, CA. Key Responsibilities
Manage and supervise accounting staff
Oversee payroll, budget monitoring, expenditures, and accounting systems
Ensure compliance with GASB, federal, state, and local regulations
Lead month‑end and year‑end close, including accruals and reconciliations
Prepare and review financial statements, analyses, and reports
Coordinate internal and external audit activities
Develop and update accounting policies and procedures
Support budget development, projections, and adjustments
Serve as liaison with county, state, and other government agencies
Provide fiscal guidance and training to departments and stakeholders Requirements
4+ years of accounting experience, including supervisory experience
Prior experience in a city department, water district, school district, county, or other governmental entity
Strong working knowledge of GASB standards
Experience with governmental accounting systems and Excel -Prior government, city, water district or educational industry experience - must have Requirements
Minimum of 4 years of detail-oriented accounting experience, including supervisory responsibilities.
Proven experience working with governmental entities, such as city departments, school districts, or water districts.
Strong knowledge of GASB standards and governmental accounting practices.
Proficiency in using governmental accounting systems and advanced Excel skills.
Expertise in month-end close, general ledger management, and account reconciliations.
Familiarity with journal entries and financial statement audits.
Ability to provide fiscal guidance and ensure compliance with relevant regulations.
Excellent communication and leadership skills to collaborate effectively across teams.
