The ideal candidate will own construction accounting activities including job costing, AIA progress billings, retainage tracking, and financial reporting while ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timely month-end closes. This role requires hands-on proficiency with Sage and deep knowledge of construction accounting practices. The Accounting Manager will partner with project managers and senior leadership to provide financial insight and maintain strong internal controls. Key Responsibilities Oversee day-to-day accounting operations including general ledger maintenance, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll for a construction business. Manage job costing processes, track project budgets and variances, and ensure accurate allocation of costs to jobs. Prepare and review AIA progress billings, change order billings, retainage schedules, and collections related to construction contracts. Lead month-end and year-end close processes, prepare financial statements, and deliver timely management reports and cash flow forecasts. Maintain and administer the Sage accounting system: set up jobs, maintain charts of accounts, configure billing templates, and troubleshoot system issues. Ensure accounting practices comply with GAAP, contract terms, lien laws, and bonding requirements; coordinate audits and respond to auditor requests. Develop and maintain internal controls, accounting policies, and process improvements to increase efficiency and accuracy. Supervise, mentor, and develop accounting staff; set priorities, review work, and support professional growth. Collaborate with project managers, estimators, procurement and senior leadership to provide financial analysis, project reporting, and decision support. Support tax preparation, year-end close activities and liaise with external CPA firms and tax advisors as needed. Qualifications Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required. Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years focused in construction accounting. Proven, hands-on proficiency with Sage accounting software (Sage 100/300 or equivalent) required. Direct experience preparing AIA progress billings, change order billing, retainage management, and construction contract revenue recognition required. Strong understanding of GAAP, job costing, billing cycles, and construction financial controls. Advanced Excel skills and experience with accounting reporting tools; comfort with system configuration and troubleshooting. Demonstrated experience managing month-end close, financial statement preparation, budgeting, and cash flow forecasting. Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills; ability to work cross-functionally with project teams and senior management. Experience supervising or managing accounting staff is highly desirable (Manager as a preferred skill). CPA designation is a strong plus and preferred but not required.
