Job Description

Job Summary The Project Accountant focuses entirely on the financial lifecycle of specific company projects (common in construction, engineering, consulting, and tech). This role acts as the financial bridge between the project management teams and the corporate finance department, ensuring projects remain profitable, on budget, and properly billed.
Key Responsibilities Project Financial Tracking:
Set up new projects in the accounting system, monitor project costs (labor, materials, overhead), and track progress against the approved budget.
Progress Billing:
Prepare and issue complex, milestone-based, or time-and-materials (T&M) invoices according to contract terms.
Variance Analysis:
Conduct monthly financial reviews with Project Managers to analyze variances between actual costs and budgeted forecasts.
Revenue Recognition:
Ensure revenue is recognized accurately in accordance with accounting standards (e.g., ASC 606 / percentage-of-completion method).
Project Closeout:
Reconcile project accounts upon completion, release retainage, and archive financial records.
Audit Support:
Provide documentation and tracking for internal and external project-related audits.
Qualifications & Requirements Education:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related field.
Experience:
5+ years of accounting experience, with at least 2+ years specifically in project accounting or job costing.
Skills:
Advanced Excel skills (VLOOKUPs, Pivot Tables); deep understanding of project management financial metrics; experience with project-heavy ERP software (e.g., Deltek, Sage, Procore, or Oracle).
