Job Description
Director of Finance Reports to: Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Organization Description West Virginia Women Work (WVWW) is a statewide 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to supporting and advocating for the education, employment, and economic equity of all women. WVWW operates workforce development and pre-apprenticeship training programs across West Virginia, with a focus on skilled trades, economic mobility, recovery-to-workforce pathways, and serving rural and historically underserved communities. WVWW is in an exciting period of growth, expansion, and systems development, including the launch of a new headquarters and workforce training HUB in Fairmont, WV. Position Summary The Director of Finance & Grants is responsible for the financial health, compliance, and fiscal operations of WV Women Work. This position oversees organizational accounting, grant financial management, budgeting, payroll, audit coordination, and financial reporting while helping strengthen systems that support WVWW's long-term sustainability and growth. This is a hands-on leadership role in a fast-paced, mission-driven nonprofit environment. The ideal candidate understands both nonprofit accounting and the realities of grant-funded operations. They are highly organized, detail-oriented, solutions-focused, and able to communicate financial information clearly to both finance and non-finance staff. The Director of Finance & Grants works closely with the CEO and COO to ensure WVWW remains financially strong, compliant, and strategically positioned for continued expansion. Core Responsibilities 1. Financial Management & Accounting Maintain oversight of organizational financial systems and accounting processes Manage general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and reconciliations Oversee payroll preparation, quarterly reporting, and related filings Ensure accurate monthly and year-end financial close processes Prepare internal financial reports and supporting documentation Monitor organizational cash flow and financial sustainability Support development and implementation of internal financial controls and policies 2. Grant Management & Compliance Oversee financial management of federal, state, foundation, and private grants Track restricted funding and grant allocations across programs Prepare grant invoices, reimbursement requests, and financial reports Ensure compliance with grant requirements and applicable regulations Support program staff in understanding grant budgets and allowable expenses Assist with grant proposal budgets and financial forecasting Monitor timelines, reporting deadlines, and documentation requirements 3. Budgeting & Financial Planning Collaborate with CEO on annual organizational budget development Assist with programmatic and grant-specific budgeting Monitor budget performance and identify financial risks or opportunities Support long-term financial forecasting and scenario planning Prepare financial information for leadership, funders, and Board of Directors 4. Audit, Reporting & Risk Management Coordinate annual audit process and work with external auditors/accountants Maintain organized financial records and audit-ready documentation Prepare financial reports for Board meetings and leadership review Ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards and reporting requirements Assist with organizational insurance, financial policies, and risk management efforts 5. Systems Development & Organizational Support Help improve and streamline financial workflows and operational systems Collaborate with leadership to strengthen organizational infrastructure Support implementation of financial best practices as WVWW continues to grow Assist with development of policies and procedures related to finance and grants Work collaboratively with staff across multiple program sites Required Skills & Competencies Experience with QuickBooks, Excel, and cloud-based financial systems required Strong understanding of nonprofit accounting and grant management High attention to detail and organizational skills Ability to manage multiple funding streams and deadlines simultaneously Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities Ability to communicate financial information clearly and professionally Ability to work independently while collaborating closely with leadership Comfortable operating in a growing, evolving organization Strong discretion and ability to handle confidential information Commitment to WVWW's mission and values Preferred Qualifications 5+ years of accounting, nonprofit finance, or grant management experience Experience managing federal or state grant funding strongly preferred Experience with nonprofit audits and compliance preferred Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field preferred CPA or advanced financial certifications welcomed but not required Experience with workforce development, nonprofits, or social services preferred Work Environment This is a full-time position based in Fairmont, WV, with flexible scheduling and limited remote work opportunities. Compensation & Benefits Salary Range:
