Job Summary:
The mission of the South Dakota Department of Social Services is strengthening and supporting individuals and families by promoting cost effective and comprehensive services in connection with our partners that foster independent and healthy families. The Office of Recoveries & Fraud Investigations identifies situations where social services benefit programs were obtained inappropriately and identifies and seeks recovery when the state is owed money if social services program benefits were overpaid due to error, fraud, or if other resources are responsible for paying first. The Financial Program Assistant maintains financial processes, monitors financial activities, reviews and reconciles financial documents, and prepares financial reports to ensure compliance with the established guidelines of programs. We are looking for an individual who is: a highly motivated and experienced person with a passion for serving the public and displays a high level of effort and commitment towards completing assignments and goals; a compassionate individual who listens attentively to others and clearly conveys information and ideas; a dependable and organized individual who effectively plans and organizes work activities; a person who is dedicated and who will represent the Department of Social Service with integrity and enthusiasm; and an individual who works cooperatively with others and promotes a friendly work climate in order to achieve shared goals. Assists program professionals with the financial responsibilities of an agency by maintaining financial processes, monitoring financial activities, reviewing and reconciling financial documents, and preparing financial reports to ensure compliance with the established guidelines; communicating, interpreting, and applying guidelines; independently implementing work processes and developing procedures to complete assigned work within the limits set by program professionals; and applying independent judgment to non-routine financial procedures.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
Degree and work experience in a relevant field such as public administration, human services, public health, finance, health care administration, or a related field.
Knowledge of:
methods and practices of financial recordkeeping extensive knowledge of bookkeeping practices and procedures; work processes pertaining to finance and accounting; basic statistical measures; software applications; database development and maintenance; public assistance programs, objectives, and delivery methods and procedures (preferred but not required).
Ability to:
interpret and comprehend program guidelines and procedures; communicate both effectively and accurately; gather, interpret, report, and use information concerning assigned activities; assess process effectiveness and develop changes or alternatives; train and provide guidance to staff and service users; navigate various data sources and computers software; conduct research and compile and analyze data; establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and the public; compile complex financial records and prepare financial reports; work independently and exercise judgment.. This position is eligible for Veterans' Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08.
