The Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Authority is seeking qualified candidates for an Accounting Manager position to lead financial close processes, ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and state policies, and oversee full-cycle accounting. This role requires a strong accounting background, advanced Excel skills, and proven leadership to support department goals. The primary focus of this position is to manage accounting, account reconciliations, and journal entry tracking. This includes integrating transactions across multiple divisions such as Accounts Payable, Sales Audit, Accounts Receivable, Payroll, Assets, and Financial Reporting, ensuring strict adherence to GAAP and Commonwealth's Accounting Policies and Procedures (CAPP). This individual will develop and maintain sound fiscal accounting practices and internal controls ensuring data integrity, to comply with applicable state regulations while providing excellence in customer service to internal and external customers. Areas of Responsibility Lead monthly and year-end financial close processes and oversee full-cycle accounting functions (AP, AR, capital assets, sales audit, inventory, payroll, and general ledger). Ensure that GAAP and CAPP are followed consistently and accurately. Ensure taxes are recorded and transferred to Department of Accounts (DOA) to comply with state policies and the Code of Virginia. Ensure that all balance sheet accounts are properly reconciled on a timely basis. Apply grant accounting guidance to agency transactions to ensure proper compliance. Provide direction to the accounting team by clearly communicating performance standards and expectations that relate to the goals and objectives of the department. Address and document performance issues in a timely manner and ensure staff receive frequent, constructive feedback. Ensure staff has the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to accomplish goals by developing individual training plans for each employee and utilizes the agency reward and recognition program to foster positive behaviors. Collaborate with the other division managers to support overall department goals and objectives. Minimum Qualifications Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and proficiency in financial accounting software. Deep understanding of accrual-based accounting and internal control policies, including documenting processes and desktop procedures. Experience in organizing workloads in a high pressure, fast-paced environment, while handling multiple priorities and tasks, meeting deadlines and understanding compliance requirements. Considerable experience with fiscal duties and operations including technical research and strong analytical and decision-making skills. Proven ability to identify complex problems, develop and evaluate workable solutions, and make recommendations to management. Degree in accounting or equivalent work experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
Certified public accountant (CPA) designation. Prior experience working within the Commonwealth's State agencies. Five or more years of accounting and financial management experience, including supervisory roles.
