Work Shifts 8:00 A.M - 4:00 P.M Duties & Responsibilities Purpose of Position :
03126F 03136H 1/7/07 Under supervision, with latitude for independent judgment and decision making, serves as an advisor on medico-legal matters pertaining to the evaluation of personal injury claims against the NYC Health and Hospitals Corporation and the review and identification of cases that are potential liabilities against the Corporation. There are two (2) Assignment Levels to differentiate ascending order of assignment difficulty with corresponding pay levels. Perform related work.Assignment Level I Examples of Typical Tasks :
In the Central Office Litigation Division Prepares comprehensive reports on medical evidence and findings relating to personal injury claims against the Corporation, for use by Counsel in reaching decisions on settlement or litigation in regard to specific claims. Reviews, analyzes and evaluates medical records and prepares medical abstracts. Confers with Counsel on medico-legal aspects of claims in preparation for examinations before trial and litigation. In the Corporate-wide Risk Management Divisions Reviews all sources of pre-litigation referrals for cases that are potentially reportable into the New York Patient Occurrence and Tracking System (NYPORTS) and under the Safe Medical Device Act. Conducts chart and medical record reviews and prepares summaries of findings; refers patient quality of care issues to the appropriate personnel or department for additional review and analysis. Provides on-going monitoring of identified potential risks that exist in the areas of hospital operations or in the rendering of medical and nursing care. 4. 5. Assists in the preparation of quarterly Board of Directors reports regarding occurrences and investigative findings, including actions taken to prevent/reduce reoccurrences and improve performance and patient safety. May prepare correspondences or other documentation, as directed, for Counsel in the medical litigation division, outside Counsel retained by the Corporation and/or regulatory agencies, regarding pre-litigation and litigation cases Minimum Qualifications 1. A valid license as a New York State Registered Professional Nurse and two (2) years of satisfactory nursing experience in a hospital environment; or 2. A valid New York State registration as a Physician's Assistant and one (1) year of satisfactory experience as a Physician's Assistant in a hospital environment; or 3. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university and two (2) years of responsible full-time health care risk management experience in a legal or medical office/division; or 4. A satisfactory combination of education and/or experience.
