Authorization & Benefits Specialist Valley Dermatology Yakima, WA (with support for multiple clinic locations) Full-Time | Monday-Thursday About Valley Dermatology Valley Dermatology is a growing, physician-led dermatology practice dedicated to providing exceptional medical, surgical, and cosmetic dermatologic care throughout Central Washington. We are seeking a detail-oriented and patient-focused Authorization & Benefits Specialist to join our team. Position Summary The Authorization & Benefits Specialist plays a critical role in ensuring patients have timely access to care by obtaining insurance authorizations, verifying benefits, and serving as a resource for both patients and providers regarding insurance coverage requirements. The ideal candidate is highly organized, comfortable navigating payer portals, and experienced in medical insurance processes. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Verify insurance eligibility and benefits for patient visits, scheduled services and procedures. Collect and update insurance cards and demographics to proactively manage any expired policies prior to patient visits Obtain prior authorizations for medications, procedures, surgeries, laboratory services, and imaging studies. Monitor authorization status and follow up with insurance carriers as needed. Communicate authorization requirements, coverage information, and patient financial responsibilities. Review payer policies and medical necessity requirements. Maintain accurate documentation within the electronic medical record (EMR). Coordinate with providers, clinical staff, surgery schedulers, and billing personnel to ensure timely approvals. Ensure approval is in hand prior to scheduling visits to minimize claim rejection. Assist with appeals, reconsiderations, and authorization denials. Stay current on payer guidelines and insurance regulations. Provide exceptional customer service to patients and referring offices. Proactively assist patients with understanding benefits to maximize patient satisfaction and payment timeliness Qualifications Required High school diploma or equivalent. Minimum of 2 years of experience in a medical office, healthcare administration, insurance verification, and prior authorization performance. Knowledge of commercial insurance, Medicare, Medicaid, and managed care plans. Strong attention to detail and organizational skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Proficiency with computer systems and EMRs. Preferred Familairity with Washington state payers- Regence, Premera, UHC, Molina, First Choice Etc. Dermatology experience. 2 years of experience in medical billing and coding Knowledge of medical terminology, CPT, ICD-10, and HCPCS coding. Experience with Modernizing Medicine (EMA) or similar EMR systems. Skills & Competencies Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking abilities. Professional and compassionate communication style. Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with a team.
