Job Description
Associate UnderwriterPosition OverviewThe Associate Underwriter supports the underwriting team by evaluating, pricing, and managing property and casualty insurance risks. This role focuses on applying underwriting guidelines to assess exposures, prepare quotes, and maintain profitable account portfolios while ensuring compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements. The Associate Underwriter will collaborate with senior underwriters, brokers, and claims to help grow the book of business and improve risk selection processes.
Key ResponsibilitiesEvaluate new and renewal accounts by reviewing applications, loss history, and supporting documentation to determine risk exposure and appropriate terms.
Prepare risk assessments, pricing recommendations, and policy endorsements in accordance with underwriting guidelines and targets.
Support senior underwriters by producing quotes, cover notes, and policy documents; escalate complex or borderline risks for review.
Analyze portfolio performance and loss trends to identify opportunities for rate adjustments, coverage changes, or targeted marketing.
Communicate with brokers, agents, and internal teams to negotiate terms, clarify exposures, and resolve underwriting inquiries in a timely manner.
Ensure accurate documentation and data entry in underwriting systems, maintaining compliance with company procedures and regulatory requirements.
Participate in risk control activities, including site inspections or coordinating with loss control specialists when required.
Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives by recommending process enhancements, automation opportunities, and underwriting tools.
Assist with training and mentoring of less experienced team members when appropriate.
QualificationsBachelors degree in Risk Management, Finance, Business, Insurance, or related field preferred.1+ years of underwriting or property & casualty insurance experience, or equivalent exposure in a related insurance role.
Working knowledge of property and casualty products, coverages, exclusions, and common policy language.
Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret loss runs, financial data, and exposure metrics to make informed underwriting decisions.
Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and experience with underwriting or policy administration systems.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills; comfortable negotiating with brokers and presenting underwriting rationale.
Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
Familiarity with insurance regulations and compliance requirements; state insurance license or willingness to obtain licensing preferred.
Professional designations such as CPCU, AU, AINS, or others are a plus but not required.
