What You'll Do:
Assistant Underwriter:
This position supports the Underwriters and the Underwriting function. Evaluates routine new and existing business applications and supplementary materials to determine the degree of risk, premiums, and insurability according to company policies and guidelines.
Senior Assistant Underwriter:
In addition to the job duties which fall under the Assistant Underwriter position, this role exercises a greater degree of independent judgment in evaluating applications for insurance coverage and endorsements with a higher authority level and requires more knowledge and experience in analyzing risk and understanding exposures.
Key Responsibilities:
Review and approve new business applications, endorsements, policy changes, and other routine transactions within defined authority. Research and process policy updates, supporting documents, and correspondence, ensuring proper classification, coverage, and rating. Run underwriting reports, maintain records, and refer items exceeding authority to an Underwriter. Assist with audits, renewals, reinsurance records, and policies requiring special attention. Handle questions and changes related to policy dates, equity, or accounting, coordinating with internal departments as needed. Draft letters and communications to correct or modify policies and coverages. Communicate with agents, customer service representatives, insureds, mortgagees, and other stakeholders to provide accurate information, documentation, and customer service. Train and mentor less experienced staff in underwriting systems and policy knowledge. Identify and define work orders for system and process improvements with I.T. teams. Maintain current knowledge of underwriting practices by attending training, webinars, and industry events. Perform other duties as assigned
Senior Level Distinction:
Exercises broader authority to independently underwrite routine applications and policy changes. Applies advanced judgment in decision-making and documents rationale effectively. Processes more complex endorsements and provides guidance to agents, customer service representatives, and other staff. Leads and contributes to special projects, working independently or collaboratively as required. Provides advanced training and mentorship to Assistant Underwriters and less experienced personnel.
What You Bring:
Assistant Underwriter:
Associates Degree and a minimum two years of work experience in a related area, except that additional work experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the formal education requirement.
Senior Assistant Underwriter:
Associates Degree and a minimum four years of work experience in a related area, except that additional work experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the formal education requirement. Has a proven ability to perform at the Senior Assistant Underwriter level. Also, preferred is completion of the Associate in Insurance designation program (AINS) with The Institutes. Why Join Us?
