Job Description
Overview We are seeking a dynamic and detail-oriented Underwriter - Reinsurance to join our team! In this pivotal role, you will evaluate and assess property/casualty treaty reinsurance submissions, analyze risk exposures, and develop underwriting strategies/pricing that align with our company's objectives. Your expertise will help evaluate business opportunities, ensure profitable results, and support the growth of our reinsurance portfolio. This position offers an exciting opportunity to leverage your analytical skills, financial intelligence, and negotiation tactics within a collaborative and fast-paced environment. The position is primarily remote with intermediate travel requirements, including minimal attendance at the office headquarters in northern Illinois. Duties Establish and maintain relationships with brokers and clients through virtual and in-person meetings as well as ongoing correspondence Evaluate reinsurance submissions by applying advanced underwriting techniques, including risk analysis, understanding of reinsurance pricing model and catastrophe model results, and assessing appropriate reinsurance contract language, then recommending a course of action. Negotiate terms and conditions with brokers and clients to secure favorable agreements while maintaining risk appetite standards Monitor ongoing portfolio performance through financial analysis to identify emerging risks or opportunities for optimization. Conduct virtual and in-person audits of accounts as needed to ensure proper risk evaluation and continued success of portfolio Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including accounting, actuarial, claims, and underwriting, to ensure consistency in risk evaluation and renewal Maintain thorough documentation of underwriting decisions, risk assessments, and correspondence in compliance with company standards. Monitor and research market trends and current developments in re/insurance industry, including evaluating insurance exposures, policy forms, and complex coverages Additional underwriting functions and duties as needed and assigned Participate in the ongoing development of the department and organization, including the review and implementation of processes, systems, and strengthening of internal controls Requirements Bachelor's degree preferably in insurance, finance, mathematics or related Proven experience in re/insurance underwriting or a related insurance services role with a focus on risk analysis and re/insurance products (minimum 5 years) Insurance designations are a plus (CPCU, ARe, etc. or in progress toward completion) Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word) and general computer skills Exceptional customer service skills with a friendly demeanor and professional etiquette for written, verbal, and interpersonal communications with external parties as well as working cross-functionally with other staff Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively Excellent negotiation skills combined with the ability to communicate complex concepts clearly and effectively.
