About the Role The Senior Underwriter is responsible for evaluating and underwriting mid-market hard money loans for commercial real estate properties. This role requires extensive knowledge of commercial underwriting processes, including agency takeout, and a proven ability to assess and mitigate risk. The ideal candidate brings strong analytical skills, sharp attention to detail, and the ability to make sound credit decisions that align with our risk appetite and lending guidelines. What You'll Do Conduct thorough analysis and underwriting of loan applications for residential and commercial real estate, ensuring compliance with company guidelines and industry standards. Assess borrower creditworthiness, property value, market conditions, and overall loan feasibility. Perform detailed due diligence, including review of financial statements, credit reports, appraisals, environmental reports, and other relevant documentation. Collaborate with originators, processors, and other stakeholders to gather necessary information and provide clear, concise loan decisions. Structure loan terms and conditions to mitigate risk while meeting the needs of borrowers and the company's lending objectives. Prepare and present comprehensive loan approval packages to senior management and investment committees. Monitor and manage loan portfolios, identifying potential risks and recommending corrective actions as needed. Stay current with market trends, regulatory changes, and industry best practices to keep the company's underwriting practices competitive and compliant. Mentor and provide guidance to junior underwriters and support staff, fostering a collaborative team environment. Assist in developing and updating underwriting policies, procedures, and guidelines to enhance efficiency and risk management.
Requirements:
What We're Looking For Bachelor's degree in Finance, Business Administration, Real Estate, or a related field. Minimum of 5 years of experience in commercial real estate underwriting, with a strong focus on hard money lending and agency takeout. Proven ability to analyze complex financial statements, credit reports, and market data to make informed underwriting decisions. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively interact with clients, brokers, and internal stakeholders. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines. Proficiency in underwriting software and tools, as well as Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint). High level of integrity and professionalism, with a commitment to ethical lending practices. Schedule & Work Environment This is a full-time, Monday-Friday position. Occasional evening or weekend work may be required based on business needs. The role is primarily office-based with up to 5% travel.
