Water Asset Manager Job Description The Water Asset Manager inspects and evaluates water distribution assets in the field to identify leaks, support non-revenue water recovery, and ensure accurate mapping of system components. This role works closely with a project manager, uses specialized acoustic equipment and mobile applications, and spends most of the time outdoors in varying and sometimes extreme weather conditions. The position combines hands-on fieldwork with careful documentation, data collection, and customer interaction to support effective water asset management and leak detection programs. Responsibilities Inspect water asset valves, hydrants, meters, and water meter boxes for leakage and overall condition. Use headphones and acoustic sensors to listen for leaks and accurately identify potential problem areas. Notify the project manager promptly of any possible leaks or issues discovered in the field. Work alongside a project manager, either traveling from the project manager's location to the job site or meeting directly at the job site. Use phone applications to map assets, record inspection results, and support accurate location tracking. Conduct non-revenue water recovery and control services, including leak detection activities such as sounding of fittings and leak noise correlation. Plan and deploy acoustic noise loggers to monitor water networks and detect leaks. Support water network establishment and asset identification, ensuring assets are correctly located and recorded. Plan and implement step tests and participate in flow and pressure data recovery to help pinpoint leaks and system inefficiencies. Progress in the use of equipment and tools utilized by the Water Asset Management division, continually improving technical proficiency. Complete job forms, time sheets, and all other required documentation accurately and on time. Apply safe working methods at all times and conduct or participate in weekly safety meetings. Read, interpret, and measure using Map/GIS information to support accurate fieldwork and reporting. Facilitate all leak detection work requirements, including advising on and participating in night work as needed. Use initiative to find practical solutions in the field for the benefit of the customer and the Water Asset Management division. Attend or conduct site meetings with clients as needed to discuss work progress, findings, and recommendations. Maintain all equipment related to specific projects, ensuring proper upkeep, and produce a quarterly stock check. Perform inspections and work activities around clean water assets, including manholes and related infrastructure. Walk long distances in the field, with frequent bending and lifting, to thoroughly inspect assigned areas. Essential Skills High school diploma or GED. One to two years of experience in a physically demanding job if no degree in a related field. Experience working outside on a regular basis, preferably in extreme weather conditions. Ability to walk up to 10 miles per day with frequent bending. Ability to lift up to 20 pounds during routine field activities. Willingness and ability to work a flexible schedule that includes travel and extended work hours. Self-motivation and the ability to work independently with confidence and minimal instruction. Strong communication skills for interacting with project managers, team members, and customers. Strong customer service skills to represent the organization professionally in the field. Commitment to safety and the consistent use of safe working methods. Basic proficiency with mobile phone applications for mapping and data entry. Ability to read and interpret Map/GIS information or willingness to quickly learn these skills. Additional Skills & Qualifications Degree in Environmental Science, GIS, Biology, Geology, or a related field is preferred. Experience with water distribution systems is desirable. Experience with acoustic leak detection methods and equipment is desirable. Experience in Map/GIS information reading, interpreting, and measuring is preferred. Experience as a utility technician, field technician, or GIS technician is beneficial. Familiarity with water pipes, inspection processes, and documentation of inspection results is an advantage. Willingness to learn new equipment and technologies used by the Water Asset Management division. Work Environment This is a field-based role that requires working primarily outdoors, often in heat and other challenging weather conditions. The standard work schedule is Monday through Thursday for a total of 40 hours, with travel typically occurring from Sunday through Thursday. The position involves frequent travel to job sites, sometimes over multiple days, with lodging provided during travel. A company vehicle is available for work-related travel. Work includes extensive walking, frequent bending, and light lifting while inspecting water infrastructure such as valves, hydrants, meters, meter boxes, and clean water manholes. The role relies on the use of acoustic sensors, headphones, mobile phone applications, and Map/GIS tools to locate and document water assets and potential leaks. Safety is a core focus, with regular safety meetings and adherence to established safety procedures in all field activities. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Knoxville, TN. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $18.50 - $18.50/hr.
