Job Title:
Payroll Technician Position Summary:
Contract Opportunity -Assignment Length up to 5 months. Local government municipality is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented- Payroll Supervisor
- to oversee the accurate and timely processing of the City's payroll operations.
- Supervise and coordinate all payroll functions for City employees, including regular, supplemental, and special payrolls
- Ensure compliance with applicable labor laws, tax regulations, retirement systems, and collective bargaining agreements
- Review and approve payroll calculations, timesheets, deductions, and adjustments for accuracy and timeliness
- Serve as the subject-matter expert for payroll policies, procedures, and systems
- Prepare and reconcile payroll-related reports, including tax filings, audits, and year-end reporting (e.g., W-2s)
- Respond to payroll inquiries from employees, departments, auditors, and external agencies
- Develop, document, and improve payroll procedures and internal controls
- Train, mentor, and evaluate payroll staff
- Coordinate payroll system upgrades, testing, and implementation of new regulations or benefits programs
- Participate in audits and provide requested payroll documentation Qualifications
- Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Human Resources, or a related field
- Minimum of 5 years of increasingly responsible payroll experience, including supervisory experience
- Public sector payroll experience and familiarity with union contracts strongly preferred
- Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Thorough knowledge of payroll principles, practices, and regulatory requirements
- Experience with payroll systems and timekeeping software (public-sector systems preferred)
- Strong attention to detail, analytical skills, and problem-solving ability
- Ability to interpret and apply policies, contracts, and regulations
- Excellent communication and customer service skills
- Ability to handle confidential information with discretion and professionalism Licenses and Certifications (Preferred)
- Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) or equivalent certification
