Full Job Description Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Lead and manage end-to-end payroll operations for a multi-state workforce across weekly and bi-weekly pay cycles Supervise, mentor, and develop a payroll team, driving accountability and performance Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll laws, including complex jurisdictions (e.g., California wage and hour regulations) Oversee complex payroll elements, including bonuses, commissions, and equity compensation (RSUs and stock options) Manage payroll tax filings, reconciliations, and regulatory compliance across all jurisdictions Partner with HR, Finance, and Legal to ensure accurate compensation structures, benefits deductions, and reporting Support and lead internal and external audits; contribute to SOX compliance and internal control frameworks (preferred) Oversee year-end payroll processes, including W-2s, 1099s, and related filings Evaluate and improve payroll systems, processes, and controls to enhance efficiency and scalability Ensure proper handling of multi-state taxation, including unemployment insurance, reciprocity, and local tax requirements Resolve complex payroll issues and employee inquiries with a high level of service Maintain and document payroll policies, procedures, and internal controls Manage relationships with payroll vendors and system providers
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Human Resources, or related field (or equivalent experience) 5+ years of payroll experience, including 2+ years in a leadership or supervisory role Proven experience managing multi-state payroll across a large, distributed workforce Strong knowledge of payroll tax regulations, wage and hour laws, and compliance requirements Experience with equity compensation, including RSUs and stock options, and related tax implications Experience operating in a complex, high-growth environment Proficiency with payroll systems (e.g., UKG) Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills High level of accuracy and attention to detail Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in healthcare, particularly DME or similarly regulated environments Experience supporting SOX compliance and audit-intensive environments Deep knowledge of complex state payroll laws, especially California CPP (Certified Payroll Professional) certification Experience scaling payroll operations in a multi-state, high-growth organization
