The Payroll Manager consultant will lead payroll operations for a large, complex workforce. This contract-to-permanent opportunity is ideal for a detail-oriented candidate who can oversee domestic and international payroll processes with accuracy, timeliness, and strong compliance knowledge. The role will support payroll activity across multiple states while partnering with key stakeholders to maintain reliable systems, reporting, and employee service.
Responsibilities:
  • Direct end-to-end payroll processing for a high-volume employee population, ensuring accurate and timely pay distribution across recurring payroll cycles.
  • Oversee multi-state payroll administration and help maintain compliance with applicable wage, tax, and reporting requirements.
  • Manage international payroll coordination for designated global entities, working with external vendors and internal partners to support accurate processing.
  • Lead and coach a payroll team of three, setting priorities, reviewing output, and promoting consistent service delivery.
  • Administer payroll activities within systems such as Workday, Immedis, and ADP Workforce Now, while helping resolve system-related issues and data discrepancies.
  • Review payroll inputs, audits, reconciliations, and exception reports to identify errors and implement corrective action before final processing.
  • Partner with HR, Finance, and other business teams to support payroll reporting, employee changes, and process improvements.
  • Maintain payroll records, controls, and documentation to support internal policies, audits, and regulatory requirements. Requirements
  • 10+ years of payroll experience, including leadership responsibility in a high-volume environment.
  • Demonstrated success managing full-cycle payroll for employee populations exceeding 500, with exposure to organizations of 1,000 or more employees preferred.
  • Strong experience handling payroll across multiple U.S. states with a solid understanding of related compliance requirements.
  • Hands-on knowledge of international payroll operations and coordination with global payroll providers.
  • Proficiency with payroll and HRIS platforms, including ADP Workforce Now, Workday, and similar payroll systems.
  • Experience overseeing bi-monthly payroll cycles and supporting both domestic and international payroll functions.
  • Proven ability to lead, develop, and manage a small payroll team while maintaining accuracy under tight deadlines.
