We are seeking an HR professional who is passionate about supporting employees, partnering with leadership, and driving operational excellence across both Human Resources and Payroll functions. Position Summary The Payroll Lead & HR Business Partner serves as a strategic partner to management, supporting employee relations, performance management, leave management, compliance, and payroll operations. This position reports directly to the Director of Human Resources and partners closely with leadership, Accounting, Operations, and management teams across the organization. The ideal candidate will possess strong HR business partnership capabilities, payroll administration experience, and a solid understanding of California employment law and payroll compliance requirements. This position is based in our San Carlos office and requires regular onsite presence. Hybrid flexibility may be available following successful onboarding and training, based on business needs and performance. HR Business Partner Responsibilities Partner with managers on employee relations, performance management, coaching, and organizational effectiveness Conduct sensitive workplace investigations, including fact-finding, documentation, and recommendations Support policy development and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws Advise managers on disciplinary actions, corrective action, and terminations Assist with staffing strategy, recruiting support, onboarding, and employee engagement initiatives Support leadership development and training initiatives Collaborate cross-functionally with HR, Accounting, Operations, and leadership teams to support organizational initiatives and process improvements Payroll Lead Responsibilities Provide payroll oversight, subject matter expertise, and backup support to help ensure accurate, timely, and compliant payroll processing while partnering closely with the Payroll Specialist Serve as a resource for payroll administration, reporting, audits, reconciliations, and payroll compliance matters Collaborate with HR, Accounting, and Operations teams to support payroll-related processes and continuous improvement initiatives Assist with year-end payroll activities and operational process improvements Education & Experience Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Accounting, or related field preferred Minimum 2-4 years of HR experience in an HR Generalist or HR Business Partner role Minimum 3-5 years of payroll administration experience preferred Experience processing multi-state payroll required Strong knowledge of California employment law and payroll compliance required Experience with ADP Workforce Now highly desirable Multifamily property management industry experience is a plus Skills & Competencies Strong employee relations and workplace investigation experience Strong understanding of payroll administration processes and payroll compliance requirements Advanced Excel skills preferred, including experience with pivot tables, VLOOKUPs, and reporting functions Excellent communication, coaching, and interpersonal skills Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with professionalism and discretion Proficiency with payroll systems, HRIS platforms, Microsoft Office, and reporting tools Ability to work collaboratively across departments and levels of leadership Strong customer service mindset and team-oriented approach Work Location This position is based onsite in San Carlos, CA.
