Job Description

Payroll Clerk Munster, IN 46321 $21.27 - $33.43 an hour - Part-time $21.27 - $33.43 an hour - Part-time Responsible for preparing and processing payroll and related activities for Town employees. This part-time position is in the Clerk-Treasurer's office, providing support to the Controller and Clerk-Treasurer. Qualifications High School diploma or equivalent Higher education in general office practices/accounting or related field preferred Three years of related experience in an increasingly responsible role in accounting/bookkeeping Any equivalent combination of education and experience Ability to be bonded Essential Functions Prepares and verifies bi-weekly, monthly, quarterly, and special payrolls Creates and maintains employee payroll files Set up and maintain employee information in the current payroll software Maintains data on full-time and part-time employees, including total hours, changes in name or address, salary changes, taxes, exemptions, insurance, vacation and sick leave records, and other payroll-related benefits Processes claims and vouchers for payment, and verification of account codes, as necessary Prepares monthly, quarterly, annual, and ad hoc payroll reports Prepares and submits employee benefit payments Prepares periodic utility, financial, statistical, or operational reports as assigned Answers employee questions regarding payroll Prepares and submits monthly, quarterly, and annual tax returns Prepare and process W-2 at the end of the year and other end-of-year payroll processes Prepares all accounts receivable invoices and collects on past due invoices Prints accounts payable and payroll checks and associated ACH files Maintains retirement records Serves as a back-up cashier/office assistant as needed Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Demonstrated interpersonal skills necessary to deal tactfully and effectively with management, officials, employees, business and professional groups, and the general public. Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with customers and co-workers Ability to think, apply knowledge, and rules consistently, as well as understand written instructions. Demonstrated organizational, problem-solving, and time management skills with the ability to meet frequent and challenging deadlines. Ability to maintain confidential information. Ability to effectively handle tasks in an interruption-rich environment Ability to be organized and continually seek efficiencies in workflow Able to contribute positively as part of a team, assisting with various tasks as requested. Working knowledge of standard office practices and procedures Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products Working knowledge of standard office practices and procedures Working knowledge of governmental accounting principles and practices
