Payroll Tax Consultant National organization headquartered in Charlotte is seeking a Payroll Tax Consultant. This contractor role will be responsible for ensuring accurate payroll tax calculation, withholding, reporting, and compliance across federal, state, and local jurisdictions. Consults with the Payroll team to, research complex tax issues, resolves discrepancies, performs audits, coordinates with tax agencies, and supports system configuration and enhancements. Serve as a subject matter expert for payroll tax activities within SAP, ADP, and related systems, ensuring that payroll tax processes remain compliant, efficient, and aligned with regulatory requirements. Experience with SAP SuccessFactors strongly preferred This is a 3-4 month contract role. This position is based in Charlotte NC and is an onsite position Essential Functions Ensures accurate calculation, withholding, and remittance of all federal, state, and local payroll taxes across multiple jurisdictions. Performs daily and per‑pay‑period payroll tax reconciliations, validating consistency between SAP, ADP, and the general ledger. Reviews and validates tax data for new hires, terminations, transfers, and location or compensation changes. Processes recurring tax file uploads, remittances, funding transactions, and statutory payments, ensuring timely compliance. Consults and reviews, quarterly and annual payroll tax filings, including Forms 941, 940, W‑2, W‑2C, 1099, and 1042‑S. Supports quarter end payroll tax activities, including balancing, variance analysis, and W‑2 distribution. Partners with the Payroll team to ensure accurate unemployment insurance (SUI) rates, local tax codes, tax tables, and jurisdictional requirements in payroll systems. Audits to ensure tax registrations, including setup, renewals, and closing of tax accounts in multi-state environments. Reviews and resolves tax notices, penalties, variances, and inquiries by researching root causes and developing corrective actions. Conducts internal audits of payroll tax data to ensure accuracy, compliance, and adherence to internal controls, including SOX requirements. Identifies and resolves system errors, data integrity issues, and integration problems affecting payroll tax calculations. Reviews and advises Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for payroll tax processes. Monitors legislative and regulatory changes, advising payroll leadership on required process or system updates. Partners with Payroll, HR, Finance, Accounting, Legal, and IT teams to ensure alignment and accuracy across payroll tax‑related processes. Provides tax expertise on compensation programs, special pay types (bonuses, equity, relocation), and employee inquiries. Perform other duties as assigned. Minimum Requirements High School Diploma. Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field preferred. Five (5) years of payroll tax experience required; multi‑state payroll tax experience preferred. Experience with SAP and ADP. Required Certifications, Licenses, and Registrations CPP (Certified Payroll Professional) or FPC (Fundamental Payroll Certification) preferred but not required. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local payroll tax laws, regulations, and reporting requirements. Proficiency in SAP, ADP, and payroll tax processing systems. Strong analytical, research, and problem‑solving skills. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and work with a high degree of accuracy. Proficient in Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office applications.
