NM:
I write this review for indeed reluctantly because this career is ideally one you are introduced into by an existing advisor as I was. I began studying finance when I was 13 years old in 1999. Coincidentally, that same year is when key provisions of the Glass-Steagall Act were repealed, which allowed different types of financial firms to merge and enter each other's markets. If you aren't familiar, Northwestern Mutual (NM) is a life insurance company. As of 2025 they have $378 billion in their general account portfolio. New York Life and MassMutual are also in that same range as the largest. NM also manages over $335 billion on their wealth management side. I bring this up because risk management (life, disability, long-term care insurances and annuities) is a crucial component of comprehensive financial planning. Not just investments. Most consumers very much need to be having risk management conversations complementary to investment conversations - they go hand-in-hand. Advisors that have this balanced approach, generally speaking, will be compensated more, in the long-run, from their investment book of business. Younger advisors have the ability to make significant commissions early on from the sale of risk management products. It often times takes longer to build up residual income from investments which is why having insurance commissions earlier in the career can allow advisors to survive. Early on the job is all about networking and prospecting. In order to be successful a new advisor must try to be introduced to at least 20 new connections each week. It really isn't as difficult as it may sound if you make it your top priority to ask for referrals daily. 20 referrals a week should yield about 6 "factfinding" conversations per week and should get you around 60 new clients year one. Early on, most days I would start working around 7:30am. Dial time would start around 9am and first meetings generally would start at 10:30am until 6pm sometimes later. After having this routine for at least a couple years you can start to adjust your schedule. Management/recruiting and building a unit is optional and encouraged for the right type of person. Happy to always have a conversation stephen.hill@nm.comJob Type:

Does primarily being paid commissions concern or excite you? Why? This is more of a prospecting and referral business early on. You will need to obtain at least 20 referrals a week for the best chance of success. How do you intend on gaining referrals?Work Location:
