The Consumer Use Tax Section's work processes are production oriented so you will immediately recognize the results of your hard work. The position will challenge your organizational, analytical, and communication skills. The Business Taxes Representative will learn all facets of exemption activities relating to private party purchases of vehicles, vessels, aircraft, and mobilehomes purchased from non-dealers, including but not limited to:
  • Performing in-depth research on difficult and complex use tax cases.
  • Reviewing and analyzing source information and exemption documents.
  • Dealing with taxpayers and public officials under conditions requiring tact and good judgment.
  • Conducting telephone and in person interviews with taxpayers.
  • Preparing correspondence for taxpayer to request additional information.
  • Entering clear and detailed comments related to actions taken.
  • Providing advisory services to internal and external customers. Your analytical skills will be put to the test and strengthened as you are tasked with the most difficult duties including:
  • Reviewing and analyzing source information and exemption documents.
  • Requesting billings when tax is due.
  • Reviewing responses to non-final billings.
  • Preparing cases for the Petition Section, when warranted.
  • Recommending cancellations, adjustments, and refunds when applicable.

Under Government Code 14200, this position may be eligible for partial telework for eligible candidates residing in California. All telework/hybrid schedules require staff to report to the office a minimum number of days per week. Schedules are subject to change. Currently, per the California Budget Act of 2025, all California Department of Tax and Fee Administration salaries are subject to the provisions of the State of California's Personal Leave Program.
