Contract Role Overview We are seeking an experienced Manager specializing in insurance premium tax reconciliations and filings. This role requires a hands-on professional to support a growing book of business by managing premium tax administration, reconciling premium activity, and ensuring accurate and timely multi-state tax filings. This position is suitable for a tax professional or an insurance industry professional with direct experience in premium tax reporting and compliance. Key Responsibilities Manage the preparation, review, and filing of premium tax returns, including state, local, and retaliatory taxes. Actively participate in and oversee insurance premium tax reconciliations. Oversee premium tax accruals and ensure proper recording in the general ledger. Monitor changes in premium tax laws and regulations to assess organizational impact. Lead premium tax audits and respond to inquiries from regulatory authorities. Coordinate with underwriting, finance, actuarial, and IT teams to ensure accurate data capture. Analyze premium data to determine state-by-state tax exposure for insurance policies. Maintain and improve premium tax processes, controls, and documentation. Develop and mentor junior tax staff.
Required Qualifications Education:
A Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is required.
Experience:
6-10+ years of experience in insurance premium tax, state and local tax (SALT), or a related field is required. Proven, hands-on experience with multi-state insurance premium tax filings and reconciliations is necessary.
Technical Skills:
Advanced Excel skills, including pivot tables, lookups, and data reconciliation, are required. Familiarity with premium tax software such as TriTech or OPTins is also needed. Preferred Qualifications A CPA or MST is preferred. Prior experience in public accounting with a focus on insurance premium taxes or within an insurance company with direct exposure to premium tax reporting. Experience with insurance statutory accounting and reporting. Experience supporting or building processes for new or expanding books of business. Compensation & Benefits The pay rate for this position is between $50.00 and $90.00 per hour. The bill rate for this position is between $120.00 and $175.00 per hour.
