Job Description
Job Title Tax Manager Job Summary The Tax Manager is responsible for overseeing tax compliance, reporting, and proactive planning across a complex multi-entity structure, including high-net-worth individuals, trusts, and partnerships/LLCs. The role manages the full tax delivery cycle in partnership with an external public accounting firm. The Tax Manager will lead a small internal team and collaborate closely with the CFO, Controller, General Counsel, investment operations, and outside advisors. Key Responsibilities Supervisory Responsibilities Lead, coach, and develop a small internal tax function. Prepare and conduct annual performance evaluations. Set service standards and communication norms for internal stakeholders and external advisors (timelines, responsiveness. Duties/Responsibilities Tax Compliance Own the annual tax calendar and oversee delivery of federal, state, and local filings across individuals, trusts, and partnerships/LLCs. Manage the workflow and relationship with the external public accounting firm that prepares returns: set timelines, provide organized support packages, review drafts, drive issues resolution, and ensure consistent quality/documentation. Review key tax positions, elections, and disclosures; ensure support is complete and defensible. Coordinate K-1 and information reporting intake, tracking, and reconciliation to internal records and investment reports. Oversee quarterly estimates, extensions, and payment processes; maintain estimated tax models and documentation. Manage notices, exams, and correspondence; coordinate responses with external advisors and ensure timely closure and record retention. Planning, Technical Research & Advisory Research and evaluate tax treatment for new or non-routine transactions, investments, entity changes, and structuring questions as they arise. Serve as the internal point person for technical tax analysis, coordinating with external advisors when needed and ensuring conclusions are documented and implemented consistently. Monitor federal, state, and local tax law and regulatory developments; including current-year projections and multi-year planning opportunities. Communicate relevant tax updates to the broader finance team and other stakeholders through periodic meetings or memos; translate technical changes into practical operational impacts and timelines. Finance Team Support & Cross-Functional Responsibilities Assist with cross-functional finance initiatives as directed. Collaborate with the broader finance team on both recurring and ad hoc projects and assignments. Support departmental initiatives, priorities, and special projects as needed. Qualifications Education and Experience Bachelor's Degree CPA required (or equivalent substantial tax leadership experience) Master's Degree a plus 6+ years progressive tax experience, typically including public accounting and/or private client services, with exposure to complex high-net-worth (HNW) individuals and pass-through structures
Preferred:
trust/estate income tax experience Required Skills/Abilities Deep knowledge of partnership taxation and K-1 workflows; comfort across individuals, trusts, pass-through entities, and multi-state considerations. Strong ability to manage outsourced tax compliance model (organize inputs, review outputs, drive issues to resolution with preparers).Excellent project management:
can run a tax calendar, manage multiple parallel deliverables, and hit deadlines predictably.High-quality review skills:
accuracy, consistency year-over-year, and strong documentation discipline. Practical communicator who can translate technical tax issues into next steps. Demonstrated ability to independently research and interpret complex tax issues and translate findings into clear, executive-ready guidance (e.g. options, recommendations) for CFO/Controller. Leadership skills suited to a lean environment: hands-on, coaching oriented. Strong discretion with confidential information. Process improvement mindset; comfortable with workflow tools, secure portals, and document management.Pay:
