Job Description

Intrust CPA is a Traverse City accounting firm of about 24 professionals serving closely held business owners, legal professionals, real estate investors, and high-net-worth individuals. We are hiring a Tax Manager who can do two things well: build genuine relationships with our clients, and own the technical work all the way through return signature. This is a senior role. We are not looking for a preparer who wants to be promoted into management someday. We are looking for someone who is already there, or close enough that the last steps are obvious. The right person will be on a clear path to firm leadership. About the
Role:
You will manage a portfolio of individual tax clients across the full engagement lifecycle. That means scoping the work, leading planning conversations, reviewing returns prepared by staff, signing returns you are satisfied with, and being the steady professional voice the client trusts when something complicated comes up. You will also work directly with junior staff — coaching them through technical issues, reviewing their work with the kind of feedback that actually helps them grow, and shaping how the next generation of Intrust professionals learn the craft.
Note:
While this position allows for periodic remote work, it does require regular work in our Traverse City, Michigan office. A successful candidate will live in the Grand Traverse region or be able to regularly commute to the area for work .
Core Responsibilities Include:
Manage a portfolio of individual tax engagements, including S corporations, partnerships, complex individual returns, trusts, and multi-state filings Serve as the primary point of contact for assigned clients — answering questions, managing expectations, and building trust over time Review returns and workpapers prepared by staff with the technical depth and judgment to sign off with confidence Lead tax planning conversations with clients throughout the year, not just at filing time Coach, mentor, and develop staff accountants and senior accountants through both formal review and day-to-day collaboration Participate actively in the firm's business development efforts through referral relationships, community involvement, and client retention Support the firm's operating rhythm through reliable participation in team meetings, planning cycles, and performance reviews
Staff Accountant Requirements:
Seven or more years of public accounting tax experience, with meaningful exposure to business returns (S corp, partnership) and complex individual work Comfortable reviewing and signing returns — meaning you are satisfied with the technical accuracy and the client outcome, not just the math Strong research instincts and the discipline to verify before advising Working knowledge of UltraTax and modern firm technology, or the adaptability to get there quickly CPA license is required You enjoy talking with clients. Not just tolerate it — enjoy it You are curious about their business, their family, and what they are trying to build You communicate clearly in writing and in person, without jargon and without hedging Clients trust you because you do what you say you will do, when you say you will do it Highly organized and detail-oriented.
