Job Description

Tax Manager Lexington, KY $95,000 - $110,000 This role is less about managing work. More about helping shape the future of a firm. That's the interesting part. This is a smaller advisory focused CPA firm where visibility comes naturally. Around a dozen people in total. No giant layers. No politics disguised as "leadership structure". If you make an impact here, people notice quickly. And right now, they're looking for someone who can grow into far more than just a traditional Manager role over time. The phrase they kept coming back to was this: "Partner mindset." Not in the corporate buzzword sense. In the sense of someone who: Thinks commercially Builds relationships naturally Wants to understand clients beyond the tax return Enjoys strategy and long term planning Can eventually become part of the future leadership of the firm Why this role exists The firm is growing steadily, particularly around advisory and energy related clients. And while the compliance work is important, the real direction of the business is around becoming more consultative over time. That means they need someone who can step beyond pure preparation and review work and become involved in: Client strategy Tax planning Advisory conversations Relationship management Helping clients make better long term decisions Not just filing returns after the fact. What the role actually looks like You'll still be hands on technically. This is a smaller firm environment, so nobody sits in a corner office completely removed from the work. But that's part of the appeal. You'll be involved across: Review work Complex returns Advisory projects Client meetings Long term planning discussions And because the team is small, your voice actually matters internally too. You're not waiting three levels up for somebody to notice you have a good idea. The environment Collaborative is probably the best word. Everyone works mainly from the office because the team genuinely likes working together and bouncing ideas around in real time. It feels more like a close professional team than a corporate structure. Approachable leadership Direct access to decision makers High visibility internally Strong mentorship and collaboration There's also a level of stability that's increasingly hard to find in public accounting. This isn't a revolving door environment. People build careers here. What makes this opportunity stand out A lot of firms talk about "growth opportunities". This one actually has them. Because the structure is small, there's room for someone to genuinely grow into leadership over time rather than waiting behind layers of existing Partners indefinitely. Especially if you enjoy advisory and relationship driven work. That's the direction the firm is heading. And the right person would become part of building that. Who this suits You'll probably enjoy this if: You like advisory as much as technical tax work You enjoy building relationships with clients You want visibility and influence earlier in your career You prefer smaller, collaborative environments You're thinking long term, not just looking for another title This role feels very different from large firm public accounting. Less bureaucracy. More ownership. More opportunity to actually matter. Not ready with a resume? Or want a bit more information before applying? That's fine. Apply the old-fashioned way, or simply reach out to me on LinkedIn or through the Distinct Recruitment website. I'll happily talk you through the role, the firm, and where it could take you before you make any commitments. I'm Abigail Stephen, Recruiter at Distinct. I don't just look at job specs; I look at people, and where they'll thrive. It's not about filling gaps. It's about finding a fit that lasts. Outside of work, balance for me is Pilates to reset, travel to explore, and skiing to recharge. Because the truth is, you don't slog through hours for the love of a spreadsheet. You do it for the freedom it buys you. Same principle here.
