ZHF is a member of the Independent SALT Alliance® (ISA®), a nationwide network of state and local tax professionals, which allows us to draw on ISA members' relationships and knowledge for its clients, as well as stay informed of state and local tax issues across geographic, industry and tax specialty lines. Role Description The State and Local Tax Manager is a full-time, hybrid role based in Columbus, OH. This role is responsible for managing and reviewing multistate and local tax engagements. Day-to-day responsibilities include analyzing complex state and local tax laws, identifying refund and incentive opportunities, and assisting with audit defense, voluntary disclosure, and appeals. The manager will draft technical memoranda, client correspondence, and presentations, while collaborating with attorneys, CPAs, and other professionals. Additional responsibilities include supervising and mentoring team members, contributing to business development initiatives, and staying current on legislative and regulatory changes affecting state and local tax. Qualifications Strong state and local tax technical skills, including Tax Law and general Tax knowledge relevant to multistate and local matters. Experience with Tax Planning, including structuring, nexus analysis, and identifying tax savings and incentive opportunities. Professional credential such as CPA, JD, or LLM in Taxation, or equivalent relevant experience in state and local tax is preferred Prior experience (typically 5+ years) in a law firm, public accounting firm, or corporate tax department focusing on SALT issues. Strong analytical, research, and drafting skills, with the ability to interpret statutes, regulations, and case law. Proven ability to manage multiple projects, lead engagement teams, and mentor junior professionals. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Commitment to professional ethics, confidentiality, and collaborative teamwork in a client-focused environment. Detail-oriented, organized, willingness to learn and proficient in Microsoft Excel is preferred.
