Job Description

Tax Manager (Boutique CPA Firm | Growth-Focused | Work-Life Balance)
Location:
San Diego, CA (Hybrid/Flexible)
Job Type:
Full-Time Employer:
Taxonomic Are you a tax professional who thrives on ownership, autonomy, and building something meaningful, not just grinding through busy season? We are Taxonomic, a San-Diego-based boutique CPA firm focused on high-quality client relationships, thoughtful tax strategy, and sustainable growth. We service businesses, business owners, real estate investors, and high-net-worth individuals with complex tax needs. We are focused on providing high-quality tax strategy and planning services with technical accuracy, responsiveness, and thoughtful client service. What We Are Looking For We're looking for a Tax Manager who wants more than just a job, you want to truly own the tax process, and a path to grow with the firm. What This Role Looks Like This is not a "plug-and-play" role. You will have real responsibility, direct client interaction, and the ability to drive how we operate. Manage, prepare, and review individual, business, and entity tax returns (individual, partnership, S-corporation, C-corporation, and trust tax returns). Serve as a primary point of contact for a portfolio of clients. Identify tax planning opportunities, proactively advise clients, and structure implementation. Respond to IRS and state tax notices and assist with resolution as needed. Prepare and review quarterly estimated tax calculations. Conduct tax research and document findings. Improve internal processes and workflows (your ideas will be implemented, not ignored). Manage and review tax returns prepared by staff, providing clear instructions and constructive feedback. Manage and mentor junior staff as the firm grows. Finalize deliverables for final CPA review. Who You Are We are intentionally selective here. This role is for someone who is proactive and takes ownership. Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field. CPA or EA license (or actively pursuing) preferred. Minimum 5-9+ years of public accounting tax experience. Strong technical knowledge across individual and business taxation, including multi-state taxation experience.
Excellent communicator:
clients trust you and enjoy working with you.
Self-starter mindset:
you don't wait to be told what to do. Interested in long-term growth (potential leadership track). Experience with tax software and research tools ( e.g., Lacerte, UltraTax, CCH, Checkpoint, Bloomberg Tax, or similar). What Makes This Different We know compensation matters, and while we offer a competitive salary, we also prioritize something many firms don't: work-life balance and opportunity to grow. Flexible schedule (we care about output, not face time). Reasonable busy season expectations. We actively avoid burnout with a 40 hour/week cap between January and May. Manageable yearly expectations. Direct access to firm leadership and decision-making. Opportunity to grow into a senior leadership role as the firm expands. Supportive, low-drama culture focused on doing great work without unnecessary stress.
Compensation Salary:
Competitive and based on experience (range: $75,000-$110,000 ). Performance-based bonuses tied to firm and individual success. 70% profit share for new clients you bring in and independently manage (must align with client services Taxonomic offers and clear new client approval process) Why Join Us Taxonomic is built on the belief that great client service starts with great people. We are looking for experienced professionals who are self-motivated, take ownership of their work, and enjoy helping clients navigate complex tax matters with confidence. We offer a collaborative environment where experience is valued, initiative is encouraged, and work-life balance is respected. If you're seeking an opportunity to work alongside a growing team of dedicated professionals while maintaining the flexibility to enjoy life outside of work, Taxonomic may be the right fit for you. How to Apply Submit your resume, a brief summary of your relevant experience, and a brief note answering this two-part question: "What do you believe distinguishes an exceptional Tax Manager from an average one, and what do you see as the Tax Manager's primary responsibility beyond preparing and reviewing tax returns?"
Pay:
$75,000.00 - $110,000.00 per year
Work Location:
Hybrid remote in San Diego, CA 92117
