Summary The Sales Tax Program Manager is responsible for preparing state and local sales, use and excise tax returns and reconciling related general ledger accounts. Work as part of a nimble team to support diverse operations in a growing company. Requires excellent critical thinking skills and ability to manage multiple projects. Primary Duties Prepare and/or coordinate with outside vendor to file monthly, quarterly, and annual sales, use, B&O and excise tax returns. Reconcile sales and use tax accounts in the general ledger across multiple departments and business segments. Manage resale and exemption certificates. Perform tax research on a broad range of topics and deliver clear communication of findings. Manage tax audits, coordinate information gathering and work to resolve disputes with auditors. Assist in property tax and other state and local tax compliance. Resolve external and internal sales tax inquiries. Effectively communicate with internal staff and taxing authorities on tax matters. Develop and maintain tax procedure documentation. Recommend process improvements to streamline compliance. Work independently or as part of a team on special projects as needed. Working Relationships The Sales Tax Program Manager reports directly to the SBU Controller and is responsible for working collaboratively across the organization to ensure accurate and compliant sales and use tax processes. While the role sits within the controllership structure, it partners closely with the SBU CFO's finance teams, as financial responsibilities are organized by function rather than legal entity. This requires regular coordination with Finance, Accounting, Billing, FP&A, and IT/ERP teams to ensure tax requirements are properly reflected in billing, reporting, and system processes. The position may also provide guidance to tax analysts or other team members supporting indirect tax activities. Strong working relationships across the SBU finance organization are critical to effectively manage compliance, support audits, and implement process improvements while ensuring tax considerations are integrated into day-to-day business operations. Compensation The initial annual compensation will range from $123,500 to $142,000 based on qualifications and experience.
Job Qualifications:
Education:
Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the United States Department of Education or equivalent.
Years of Experience:
Seven years of experience in multi-state indirect tax compliance at a public accounting firm or in industry. Experience managing indirect tax compliance across multiple state and local tax jurisdictions.
Preferred Experience:
Experience with tax systems implementation. Experience in construction and energy sectors.
Licenses/Certification:
CPA (preferred)
Software/Equipment Knowledge:
Strong knowledge of MS Office, general accounting systems (MS Dynamics
D365 MSFT
), and tax determination engines (Vertex & OneSource preferred)
Other Considerations:
Excellent time management skills and ability to prioritize multiple projects and deadlines. Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, including the ability to effectively problem solve and make decisions. Strong tax research skills and ability to communicate results in both written and verbal forms.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
Normal working hours are 8:00a.m. to 5:00p.m. Monday through Friday. Extended working hours may be required during periods of high workload or major projects. Occasional travel may be required.
