Job Title:
Tax Preparer Job Description The Tax Preparer is responsible for preparing accurate and timely income tax returns for individuals and small businesses. This role focuses on identifying potential tax credits and liabilities, ensuring full compliance with federal, state, and local tax laws, and maximizing the benefits legally available to clients. The position requires strong technical tax knowledge, meticulous attention to detail, and the ability to review and interpret financial records while using electronic filing software and accounting tools. Responsibilities Prepare or assist in preparing simple to complex income tax returns for individuals and small businesses. Identify potential tax credits, deductions, and liabilities to ensure clients receive the maximum benefit permitted under applicable laws. Complete tax forms in accordance with company policies and in full compliance with relevant legislation and regulations. Use federal, state, and local tax codes to accurately prepare returns and address client-specific tax situations. Review financial records such as income statements, financial statements, and documentation of expenditures to support tax return preparation. Verify totals and information on past tax forms for accuracy and consistency. Prepare and file tax returns using electronic filing software. Apply solid working knowledge of accounting and financial statement preparation to support accurate tax reporting. Maintain confidentiality of all client financial information and tax records. Demonstrate strong attention to detail to minimize errors and ensure complete and accurate filings. Manage workload to meet deadlines and work effectively under time pressure during peak periods. Take ownership of assigned work, demonstrating accountability and a proactive mindset in resolving issues and improving processes. Provide coaching and constructive feedback to colleagues to support their development and improve team performance. Communicate with clients in a personable and professional manner to clarify information and gather necessary documentation. Utilize QuickBooks, Excel, and other financial record software to gather, analyze, and organize data for tax preparation. Incorporate tax-related adjustments when applicable to optimize client tax positions. Essential Skills At least 5 years of tax preparation experience. Proven experience preparing income tax returns for individuals and small businesses. Strong knowledge of tax preparation, tax returns, and tax-related regulations. Solid working knowledge of accounting principles and financial statement preparation. Ability to review and interpret income statements and other financial records. Proficiency in QuickBooks. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel. Experience using electronic tax filing software. Strong reporting skills and ability to document work clearly and accurately. Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in all aspects of tax preparation. High level of confidentiality and discretion when handling client information. Effective time management skills and ability to work in a deadline-oriented environment. Strong work ethic and accountability for completing assigned tasks. Organizational skills to manage multiple returns and documentation simultaneously. Ability to work well under deadlines and handle time-sensitive tasks. Personable communication style and ability to work effectively with clients and colleagues. Proactive mindset with the ability to take initiative and ownership of responsibilities. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience with tax-related adjustments is a plus. General math skills to support accurate calculations and reconciliations. PC proficiency and comfort working with financial record software and office applications. Ability to coach others and provide constructive feedback to support their growth. Coachable attitude and openness to feedback and continuous improvement. Driven and motivated approach to meeting goals and delivering high-quality work. Ability to stay very organized in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. Work Environment This position is fully onsite. You will work in an office environment using electronic tax filing software, QuickBooks, Excel, and other financial record software on a PC. The role involves focused, detail-oriented work with significant interaction with financial documents and client information, particularly during peak tax seasons when deadlines are critical. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Des Moines, IA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $31.20 - $39.71/hr.
